Basically, in an animation, it's perfectly fine. In my mind I see it as a bright, clear, daylight white. If you decided you wanted to set your tree to static white for whatever reason, it might not look as good.
Edit: Also, a reason for RGBW besides color purity is that if you intend to use white heavily, remember that you will be asking it to run all R, G and B at 100% which is the most heat you can generate. A dedicated W LED will run cooler so if that's your intent, you can increase the likely life of the LED by running the cooler single diode.
