1. Place BestBuy order with a new account (not upgrade) for local pickup.
(When I selected a new number. BB asked me to schedule a BB consultation. Instead, I created a new GV#, unlocked GV# by paying $3 to google and ported GV# when placing order at BB.com. When BB.com asks for account number, you can type anything even "Google Voice".)
2. When ready, visit BB to pick up the new phone and ATT SIM. (Note that the 3-day grace period begins on the order date not when you get the phone.)
3. Activate s22 with att sim came with the phone. Test the connections.
4. Sign up ATT online account (you should receive email from ATT for this after placing order). Check the ATT page displays S22. It may say "unlock eligible" because the phone is paid off. But it's not really eligible because of 60-day rule. For a workaround, follow the next step.
5. (important) Take ATT sim out, put in a different unlocked phone, make a phone call.
6. Check the att account page displays the unlocked phone not the S22. It should show up in a few min, if not show up after hours, you may have to try a different unlocked phone.
7. Once second phone show up, go to https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/, submit unlock request for s22, choose "NOT ATT CUSTOMER", fill in the rest. (if this doesn't work, chat with an agent.)
8. You will get 1st email, asking to confirm unlock request. Click.
9. In a few min, you will get 2nd email with unlock code/instructions.
10. Boot S22 with a different SIM of your choice. Enter unlock code and voila, device is unlocked.
11. If you are using a non-ATT MVNO sim, you may get some limited functions as this S22 has ATT firmware. You can either flash U1 firmware or boot with regular VZW/TMO sim. The latter will install VZW/TMO firmware and remove all ATT apps. Phone boot logo will also change from ATT to VZW/TMO.
12. Within 2 days, chat with ATT agent to cancel your wireless plan. As long as you cancel within the grace period, you will not be charged for the plan and $35 activation fee.
