After 3 months you pay the premium which is not cheap.
My renewal is $210 for 6 months or $360 for a year with unlimited data, text and talk. So $30 a month.

You do have to own your phone so more expensive up front in that sense but end up saving more on the backend. So if anything it gets cheaper

We've been with mint for many years. Yesterday we received an email telling us our Oneplus 6 phone would no longer work on their network because they are eliminating 2g and going with only 4g and 5g. Email from Mint stated:

Our network is constantly evolving & improving to meet the needs of our subscribers with better voice quality, faster data speeds and stronger overall coverage. As a result, our 2G network will be decommissioned to make room for the newest & fastest bandwidths on April 2, 2024.
Our 5G·4G LTE network offers a noticeably better wireless experience and is already available to you at no additional cost, but your OnePlus 6 isn't compatible with it. This means you'll have to upgrade to stay connected. You don't need the latest model, just one that's compatible with our network.
I got that notice too. Mintmobile is currently offering a $50 "discount" if buying a phone through them with a 12-month plan. But mint locks the phone with them as the provider. The phone can be unlocked by placing a request to 1-800 683-7392 12-months after activation. Then there's the provider fees service mint charges. So overall the $50 discount doesn't look like a discount at all.

what do you guys do after 3m or 6m? port out to another carrier or just pay the higher price?
keep my number on Google voice so the carrier and number are irrelevant

Used Mint for all family members for years but I'm done with them now. Coverage (T-mo) in Arizona is lacking for what I need (Verizon/Visible). So long Mint.

Mint used to have great deals but I stopped liking them when they started with the options to buy longer term 6-12 months etc and then jack up the renewal prices. No way to know the future cost and you are kinda in a contract

I need a SIM card for my car using maybe 5 minutes or less of phone calls per months and 1GB of data. Is there any cheap plans basically just to keep a number alive like $2/mo?

FYI : Upfront payment of $45 required. Promotional rate for first 3 months only. Taxes & fees extra. Limited time new customer offer; non-transferrable & no cash value. Unlimited customers using >40GB/mo. will experience lower speeds. Videos stream at ~480p.
480p minimum, worst case scenario, cya. Usually get enough for 1080p.

super annoyed with attempting to transfer still and no easy way thru the app to contact support when porting a number over from T-Mobile. so far wasted 2 weeks of this "service"
Took me under a minute, to boot 4 lines of different types.

Tmo Prepaid: don't need a transfer pin & won't get one, your tmo account pin works dual purpose.
Tmo Postpaid: request transfer pin on website (instant), or call for it. Under no circumstances use your Tmo account pin- will create an unsolvable website portal software glitch, and when you call in some Mint CS wont know trick to resolve.
Metro: ditto above. FYI if you porting multiple lines under same account the transfer pin will be identical for each. BUT you must login to EACH and request transfer pin for the port to work on ALL.

I just opted for Google fi, same service, $20/month for family of 4 and I get free pixel 7s. Better value for me imo
As long as none of yous need lots of data and\or on the road a lot. I'm adding on one of my phones (not getting the pixels) a second esim Visible $20 promo...verizon network just in case- their coverage area bigger even if Tmo faster, hotspot is truly unlimited (& on iphone not limited to just one device), data rarely deprioritized even over 100gb a month in my area(used to use them awhile ago).

Google Voice. I've had the same number (tied to my Google account) for like 15 years. So when these deals come around, I never have to worry about when it ends and porting. I can use any MVNO with my Google Voice setup. I just buy whatever is the best deal at the time.
except 2fa often only works on cellular number...for those with many banking, gambling, etc.accounts.

That's not true at all. I use Google Voice as my main, and almost all (like 95%) of my verification codes come through with no issue at all. And even when there's an issue with receiving it as a text, you can still opt to get it as a voice call instead.

A minor inconvenience for the savings I've gotten over the years using this setup.
