I saw a review that said that you should think of it primarily as a roller which you can turn into a backpack when you need in certain areas vs a backpack you occasionally roll, if that makes sense.

How realistic is the "normal price" that's listed? It's this a $200 bag for $40 or more like a $60 bag?

Yeah, especially quite a few international airlines limit carry-on weight to 11lbs or 15lbs. So the rolling backpack which weight 9.6lbs pretty much take up most of the weight.

I ordered it from ebay at a higher price and it shows "shipped". When I start the return process saying that I found a lower price, ebay gives me a hefty $39 return charges. Is there another way?

I was wondering the same thing. It looks like on Amazon, the eBags store normal price is $84.

Anyone use any of these for a personal item with Spirit? Looks like all of the ones listed in the original post would be too large based on the dimensions.

I haven't watched eBags prices closely, but I can't recall the Mother Load Travel Backpack (regular or junior) being less than $99 for a very long time. $40 is an excellent price. I've owned a Mother Load Travel Backpack for about 10 years and have used it about a dozen times. I think I paid $80 to $100 for it. eBags had frequent sales and coupons back then. For a while, the Mother Loads weren't even available to purchase. I hope the new ones are the same quality as my old one. I ordered a DLX and a Junior.

Same here, and an email to their customer service for an update has gone unanswered. Thought id have for a trip next week doesnt look like its happening, 2-5 day shipping has turned into 2-4 weeks.

I've had the Mother Lode Jr for almost 10 years and still use it dozens of times a year on every trip I take. I've always used it as my carry-on, and it's still in great shape. At this price, I'm considering getting another one, although I'm not sure what I need it for.
