Picked this up for $600 about a month ago. I don't game or anything crazy, just use it for work. The screen is amazing and battery life is solid. Build quality is pretty good but not as good as the OLED Zenbook. Keyboard is solid. Negatives for me: the touchpad, especially the touchpad buttons, are annoying. The fan can be loud and annoying and seems to turn on randomly, not necessarily when using intensive applications either. I mostly use it on two different docking stations but really appreciate the screen brightness and quality when I don't dock. Upgraded from an XPS 13 and the only thing I miss is the bezleless screen and the build quality. That's about all I can comment on as I'm not well-versed in laptops.

In December I ended up purchasing this laptop and the 14.5" ASUS OLED from Best Buy. I ended up returning the ASUS as I thought the OLED image was not as good as this HP. The colors seemed richer when I compared them running animated movies on Disney+. It's true that the fan was likely to turn on for the ASUS as well while streaming Disney movies. The ASUS did feel more substantial (heavier) so it seemed like a "higher quality" machine, but in the end it ran warmer and the image wasn't as good. By the way, I have a couple of Samsung devices, an Oled tablet and fancy Chromebook and I still like this HP screen better as the colors seem more accurate. The whites always seemed to be too blue on the
Samsungs.

Seems like an all around decent mid range budget laptop. Some reviews indicate mediocre battery life to ok (5-8h). Can anyone share real world experience with battery life?

Thanks for the review. Would you say the battery is good enough to get through a work day with normal productivity apps?

Got 3 of these for the kids when they were $599 each. With Linux mint and after adding this PPA, I have all three computers running minetest and the kids love it: https://launchpad.net/~ernstp/+ar...ntu/mesarc


The build quality is great - one of my kids dropped his closed laptop literally 5 mins after getting it onto a tile floor from a 3' counter, and while the chassis has a dent on the corner, everything still works fine.

The 7840U sips battery, and I'm a little jealous that I don't have the same CPU in my Lenovo. No fan noise while gaming on the 780M, but we're not playing AAA games.

Super happy with the purchase. Haven't had to clean up legos since Christmas Day 😅


Edit: hindsight being 20/20, I have to mention this - I had a very dim view of HP before buying these. If you asked me now, I'd say $700 is still a steal for what you get here.

This is easily on par with ASUS Zenbook, with the sole exception of the arrow key layout.

Because the vast majority of consumers buying a $700 soldered RAM laptop do not need 32 GB of RAM. It would be pushing the cost up with no benefit for people who aren't trying to run serious productivity apps (or people who are still using Chrome in the year of our lord 2024)

No benefit now perhaps, but 16GB is quickly becoming insufficient for Window's Laptops
Planned obsolesce at its finest, IDK why it's so hard to have at least 1 soDimm, the benefits soldering this level of laptop are close to zero, but they need a reason to make people pay hundreds more for the next level up

Easiest solution is to get curtains. If that doesn't work, get a steel wool scrubber and make the screen matte yourself.

grabbed one on day 11? of xmas sale... for $600 you can not do better!! CPU screams.. amd780 is about as fast as a 3050. Passmark for sys was in the 7000's... nvme is within a few % of my sn850x 2tb's. Very fast lil bugger. Only weak spot from benchmark side is the ram... lddr5 always tests slow, even at 6400mhz. Wifi 6e great.. avg 500k anywhere in the house. Battery last about all day w some work, some diablo, lotta slickdeals. Buy it

I can confirm the fast Gen4 NVMe inside the Pavilion Plus 14. I unboxed this last night and immediately after the initial windows setup ran benchmarks (see 2 attached - the faster benchmark). It's faster than my 1TB SN850X (the slower attached benchmark) in another laptop.

I'm pleasantly surprised as I was expecting the total cost would be another $80 to add a SK hynix Platinum P41 1TB. I bought a HP EliteBook 865 G9 last January and the NVMe inside it was half this speed. Good going HP for using better parts.

Not positive on that. I use it pretty intermittently and am always near a charger, so I haven't really tested it out.
