The price is great but Black & Decker are not the company that they once were years ago and have changed their entire target customer base by offering extremely cheap tools and appliances at a drastically reduced quality level than their name used to carry. Some of their products are 'good enough' for occasional or light use. However, I would never invest in something like a portable AC unit from them. I'm sure it will work at first but don't expect it to have much longevity. I can appreciate tool companies that take advantage of different levels of quality and price to give consumers options across a spectrum but I just can't see a $150 portable AC unit being a cheap product I would want to roll the dice on.

Reviews are not very kind either with 17% being 1-Star.
I can't find ANYTHING even remotely comparable for anything below 300. I think 150 is more than reasonable to roll a dice... Unless I'm missing something.

So the old style window AC's are still better than today's portable ones. That's a surprise given advances in technology.

I've been there, there have been many years where money is tight but now that I have some security I have found it is much better to save up for a better reviewed/better quality. It's actually cheaper in the long run.

Based on your example: I bought domestic beaters purely on price point paying thousands on repairs. In 2013 I bought a 2006 Highlander. Other than scheduled maintenance still drive to this day.

And I shudder to think about how unsafe some of the beaters I drove before (outside of having to pull over on the highway to address something).

With climate change things are going to get hotter. You should expect to see at least 3-5 years out of a unit. Consider yourself, your time and patience as valuable and that quality of life things are worth the money. These days with so many reviewers "rolling the dice" shouldn't be necessary.

Again: you and your time are valuable. Don't waste it having to fix or replace something that would have cost less than $20 a year to replace with something better.
With climate change things are going to get hotter.REALLY??? you believe all that garbage? It's actually getting colder not hotter why do you think they changed the name?Applause

That is actually a different measurement (confusing, I know). They advertise it with the 10,000 ASHRAE BTU measurements because that is what it is supposed to be capable of performing at under ideal conditions. The 6,000 SACC BTU listed is what they are saying the expected performance average would be in varying conditions. Unless you research it, this is just not common knowledge and more industry marketing wordplay. It will most likely not perform at the advertised 10,000 BTU. That would be a perfect situation where the unit is able to function at its absolute most efficient and highest output.
Wow, why did US Dept of energy make a new unit and still call it BTU? That is terrible. All the air conditioners will keep using the old BTU because it is higher.

Absolutely agree. If somebody is going to run this for 20-30 days a year, then it's a great deal.

2 decent window units with box fans are the way to go (for average house) if you're looking for cooling without central ac working or using a generator during a power outage. Add a couple of box fans for air circulation and you're all set.

Quote from dcmanryan :
A single hose is an exhaust and only an exhaust. It use's conditioned, room air to cool the condenser where the filter is it sucks in. A dual hose sucks air from outside, passes it through the condenser and exhausts it back out. You're much more likely to have high head pressure from a dual hose unit. The problem with a dual hose it the exhaust hose is right next to the intake hose. The condenser raises the temperature of the air being discharged anywhere from 20°-30° or higher if the condenser is dirty. You people thinking a dual hose is the be all end all are wrong. A dual hose is still better as you're not making the house negative but let's say in Phoenix for example where your air is already 110° being sucked in just from the ambient temp is coming out at a much higher temp and the design of these units much of that is getting sucked right back in. Head pressure will inadvertently affect suction pressure. Many on these threads don't know basic refrigeration which is understandable but they also need to realize an AC unit sized correctly will lower the temperature 18-22°. That's it, it takes time to cool a room. If your condenser is running a high enough head pressure you won't cool properly. A window unit is far superior to a single or dual hose unit and should always be the first choice if possible. A single hose is perfectly fine in most cases if used with central air. Like I said earlier, I'd never use them as my only cooling as you will make up air through cracks eventually as you stated but some of you people think this happens in seconds after turning it on and that's not the case.
I'm just saying from experience. I've used a single hose unit and it did not cool down the tiny room I had it in which was more than adequate for that room. It felt odd why the room wasn't feeling cold even though ice cold air was coming out of the AC. Hot air from the rest of the house was coming in from under the door and yes it happens immediately when the AC is turned on because the exhaust fan immediately turns on. So you're saying a dual hose will solve the negative but will not output cold air? I ended up readjusting my central ac air vents to go more into the room, because using the single hose unit just pulled in the hot air into the house and making everything very inefficient in terms of wasted energy and the cooling it self.
