Can anyone reccomend a watch for less that has the day and date like this from a reputable seller/brand? What happened to an old school $50-80 watch that was good looking and functional?

There are several options for cheap Timex watches at JCPenney if you have one near by. Walmart also carries Timex.
Check out the Expedition or the easy reader.

There are so many options, it's really hard to recommend anything you would like without knowing the specifics of what you're looking for - but for my money in that range, id probably be looking at a gshock square, or even something even less expensive like the Casio Royale or a158. If you're more of a mechanical guy, Id bump up to the $100 mark for a seiko snxs. If you're OK with used, there are a bunch of nice older seikos and eco drives you can hunt for.

Sadly, gone are the days of the uber cheap watch. Nowadays the only real cheap/fun watches are from aliexpress. Check out YouTube to see what's out there and just buy from a good seller if you decide to go that route. I have handful. I like half of them and the other half are pretty meh on wrist. However, they are fun to wear, keep ok time and range from $25-75.

If you don't need the day function, you can get an Invicta Pro Diver Automatic from Amazon for around $60-70. Seiko has automatics for not much more if you're looking for an automatic day date. These are fairly reputable brands. While Invicta does tend to have a negative reputation nowadays, it's mainly due to its ostentatious design for newer watches. The Pro Diver line is actually regarded as one of the better watches to start with due to the low price point and the fact that it tends to use one of the most widely used and well-liked Seiko NH35A movement. It has a pretty classic design since it's a homage to the Rolex Submariner. Seiko has a wide range of entry-level watches at around $100+ for you to choose from. May be cheaper from gray market sites like Jomashop

There's really no reason to have a watch that requires a battery any longer. Go solar or automatic.
Citizen eco-drive are fantastic and can be had around this price range.

Ecodrive has a battery. Any citizen ecodrives for $60? Quartz is more accurate than automatic.
