What's the state of these "4K" projectors? Are they actually displaying 3840 x 2160 pixels, or using some sort of uprezing/supersampling to achieve 4K?

Dunno about this one, but for a while there was a pseudo 4K going around where they took a 1080p image and shifted the pixels around to claim a 4K image. A lot of people seem to be OK with 1080p vs 4K (hard to tell the difference unless up close) with HDR being valued as a more desirable feature.

it is called pixel shift. it looks better. use it all the time on 2160p material. HDR is great if bright enough...

They call it "True 4k" super annoying cause it's not. It's more pixel shifting bs. Not a knock on op, just the marketing crap

4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution from pixel shifting with TI's .47-inch chip; supports HDR10 and HLG

Agree - their pixel shift looks GREAT for the price, but the fact that they call it "True 4k" is super deceptive, especially since they don't note anything along the lines of "1920x1080x4" like many companies do (I believe they used to use this as well!).

I have had a BenQ W1070, then an HT3550, then an HT5550. All "upgrades" and noticeable differences, but having just swapped the HT5550 out for the new LED HT4550i is a game changer for me. So much crisper, brighter and better blacks than the HT5550. Save up a few more coins and get the slightly larger chip, LED-based HT4550i.

Good price for a projector with great color and brightness but still cant even come close to tv technology. Used a 5050 projector for 2 years and went to an OLED. Ill never go back. You definitely can tell tv's are just way sharper and way brighter in every aspect. Its like you havent worn your glasses that whole time.

The primary reason a lot of people go for a projector in comparison to a tv is for the screen real estate, although it is well known that tv is definitely better for image definition, hdr, brightness etc. In my case, I'd never go back to a TV ( or a theater 🙂)after having used a projector. It's so much more convenient and portable, all you need is a wall without a hole in it.

Projection is facing a rapidly shrinking market as beautiful and economic TVs are getting bigger at a faster rate than projection getting brighter/higher fidelity.

The problem for projectors is that the bar is relatively low for an equivalent TV to match. They are often loud, hot, expensive, and use consumable bulbs (ignoring laser) that dim over time (and are hardly bright, by TV standards, to begin with)

Laser projection is probably the last best hope for home projection to remain relevant in the coming decade, and getting prices down on laser units will be really tough.

Imagine a 150 inch TV(how many pounds ?) vs a 10 pound projector that could project anywhere.
A 150 inch TV if offered on wheels for free, I will still not take it. But that's just me Smilie

Consumable bulbs? You know you are talking years of use out of it before it goes out, right.
3 years of use and then pay $100 to replace a bulb-Better than moving/mounting a TV, IMHO

This is a $2000 home theater projector. Most people aren't tossing this in the backyard for movie nights.

It's certainly more flexible than a equivalent TV - but it's a shrinking market.

And how much for a TV that is 150 inch size? Sorry, I differ on the market opinion, especially when there a lot of people like me, who are all into projectors for life.

You're either failing or refusing to understand my point. I'm not saying projectors are irrelevant - I'm saying their market share will continue to shrink unless they develop better technology at lower price points. There will still be screen sizes and installation limitations that necessitate a projector.

But anyone considering 100 in will soon also be looking at televisions with brighter and more high fidelity images.
From what I know, the projector market growth prediction is an upward curve, at least till 2030. And of course the technology is only gonna evolve to give us better stuff(And AI based testing is gonna help them reach there sooner). Mind sharing where you got the data on shrinking market?
