Amazon is selling Fender Duo-Sonic electric guitars with a Pau Ferro fingerboard in sea foam green for $513.88. Amazon's description says it includes a 2-year warranty. Fender.com lists the following highlights:
  • 24" scale length; "C"-shaped maple neck
  • Two Duo-Sonic single-coil pickups
  • 9.5"-radius fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets
  • Six-saddle string-through-body hardtail Strat® bridge with bent steel saddles
  • Three-way pickup switch
As of this posting, this appears to be the lowest price for any new Fender electric guitar (with Fender by itself on the headstock). Looking back at previous frontpage Slickdeals for this guitar, it would often go as low as $300 from Adorama in 2018/2019 (in Adorama's Lake Placid blue). Now, five years later, this ~$514 $462.49 price appears to be the bottom.

I do not own this guitar, but expect it to be pretty solid and fun to play. It is a short scale guitar: 24 inch scale length compared to 24.75-to-25.5 inches for most full-size electrics. The guitar is made in Mexico. My understanding is that the weakest part of the guitar is a cheap pickup selector switch.

------
FYI -- for a few hours when first posted, some Amazon accounts got a coupon, so a lot of the discussion thread below is about Amazon coupons. That super-discounted price was ~$412. Amazon seems to have got rid of the coupon for everyone now.
---
Update: Amazon lowered the price on 7 Jan 2024 from $513.88 to $462.49

OP Note: Showing 5% clip coupon, price now $439.37

Best wishes!

For the price, it is a good electric guitar. However, if you are an intermediate player and are likely to only have one electric, I would suggest going to a store like Guitar Center in person and seeing which electric feels (and looks) the best to you. There are plenty of quality electric guitars in the $300-$500 range. To me, Yamaha (Pacifica) has some of the most consistent quality in that range. Squier Classic Vibe guitars have a good reputation. Ibanez and Epiphone have some good options too. Online, Sweetwater.com has good search functionality for seeing all the options in the $300-$500 range (an example Sweetwater search [sweetwater.com]) Once you identify a couple of guitars you like, come back to slickdeals and see if someone has found the best price for it.

I've had this one in my cart because it was $570 and had the 20% coupon. When I saw your posting that it dropped to $513 I was shocked to still see the coupon. I had to order it at $411. (That's squier money!)
Thanks for the post!

I'm seeing the 20% off coupon. I already have a player series guitar and it was a bit of a mess when I got it. The neck pickup was not grounded and the fret sprout was painful. I resoldered the pickup and addressed the sprout with a Stewmac file and it's a good guitar now. YMMV on the QC, but don't expect much over a Squier at this price point in terms of playability and setup out of the box.

Thankfully no coupon for me, because I'd buy it in a heartbeat (always wanted a Duo Sonic). I'm going to have to start giving plasma to keep up with these guitar deals.

How does the shorter length affect playability? I'm quite tall with big hands so I think I'd want a regular size one ?

you should really try it out
player strats have 25.5" necks. even on that i feel my fingers crowded playing an open A.

about 10% less string tension, similar step down in feeling from strat->les paul->duo sonic

I agree with the others, best bet is to try out a 24" scale guitar. I'm 6'5" and love my 24" jaguars for lead/arpeggio stuff, but I have long skinny fingers. Thicker fingers may feel crowded especially above the 12th fret.

I have only ever played acoustic on an Alvarez pd-91 ns series (upgraded with bone nut and saddle). Is this a good first electric guitar or should I be looking at something else ? I'd describe myself as an intermediate player

OP here. I have no idea. Others probably have better insights in to how Amazon allocates their coupons. Yesterday, I had lots of guitar coupons. After buying this duo-sonic, Amazon has removed most of them for me. My vague inclination is that Amazon uses some 'secret consumer behavior prediction' algorithms to determine who is likely to buy a guitar soon and tends to allocate those people toward some of the current deals. My uninformed/naive suggestion is to go to Amazon and look at lots of guitars, add them to wish lists, put them in your cart, save them for later... that sort of thing.
