Hit this price a few times last year (new, not open box). On paper the upgradability is the best (up to 64 GB RAM, 2 NVME SSD slots). Specs seem amazing (not sure of TDP on GPU). But each time this was posted on here, you have few people saying they received units that throttle real bad (some reason no option to set the fan profile to performance). I was look hard at this last year, loved the user replaceable RAM and SSD. The thing that turned me away was the average type screen and NO USB C CHARGING WHILE LAPTOP IS ON... like wtf

I could be wrong, but at that resolution I would think a 4070 with more than 8GB would make more sense, especially for AAA games over the next few years. If you just play basic RTS games or something, it would be great.

I bought this last year at this price. I use it for CAD and some gaming. It holds up well. I will probably upgrade to 32gb of RAM soon. I like the screen, but it is highly reflective and that can be a little annoying. I think it's great for the price. I have only seen a select few machines with better specs at this price point.

Heads-up that for a while yesterday morning the open box models was as cheap as $680. Then, midday, they corrected the open-box pricing. 🤔

I've seen Best Buy do some strange pricing gimmicks, but that was a weird one.

Agreed, at this price, it should have at least a 4090, 64GB RAM, 1200 nit screen and weigh 14 ounces. What a scam.

If I owned this laptop, I would connect a HP power tip to the AC input and then try USB-C charging with the computer powered on. Not sure it would work but I think it's worth a shot. You can buy a power tip for HP laptops or cut one off from a compatible power supply. Even if that tricked the BIOS restriction into allowing USB-C charging while the computer is powered on, you would still need an appropriate USB-C charger -- 200W or higher -- since the shipped power supply is 200W.

From what I've read, HP seems to have fan curve issues on a number of its laptops. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the fan curve in the BIOS. Despite having a dGPU, HP Envy isn't a gaming laptop per se, so it's not too surprising there apparently is no way to modify fan profiles. HP Command Center app is supposed to work with various Envy and Spectre laptops running Windows 10.

Picked this up from BestBuy in July. I really like the screen and overall have been pleased. I don't game on it, but have used it to run Solidworks, Fusion 360, and Rhino & Grasshopper.

I bounce back and forth between this and an i9-13900 / 4070 desktop - it's not a night and day difference for most tasks.

It also works well with the HP G2 dock I had from a previous system.

I did upgrade to 32gb of ram in early December. The process is doable but not user friendly … unsnapping the case is a real pain.

Was the $680 price for open box excellent or was it for worse conditions like fair?

$686 was for open box fair. You would be surprised what they call fair sometimes. I got one Monday last week for $686 and it did not come with its power cord but crystaldiskinfo said it had 6 hours total on hours. It looks brand new to me. I order a 200w cord for $30.
