Pros: Seasonic Focus unit, solid midrange platform.

Cons: Not a PCI-E 5.0/ATX 3.0 unit. Older Seasonic PSU platforms have a fairly aggressive OCP system that doesn't deal with modern GPU's transient spikes very well.

Decent deal but IMO an 850 watt PCI-E 5.0 unit will be a better buy in this price range. It's almost required to upsize by 150-300 watts for a non PCI-E 5.0 unit to handle the transient spikes, depending on the GPU. On the other hand, if it's for a non-gaming PC this will pump out 1000 watts all day long without issues.

Top-tier PSU according to Cultists: https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/. You won't find another A-tier 1000W PSU at this price.

So if I'm concerned about power spikes on a 7900 XTX, should I look to the Corsair RMe 1000W?
Just undervolt and call it a day. Your parts will last longer.

Would my Thermaltake Smart 700W 80+ work ok for a 4070 Super or would something like this deal make more sense?

Also getting a 5800x3d in a few days

I wouldn't take a chance on this Phanteks psu just bc I know they like to cut corners on other products they put out. For one thing their cases are not up to marketed specifications. It's a different product I know but kinda shows their scheme of things.
A Seasonic base doesn't sound that great at all. I prefer Corsairs and similar ones I've had used and had zero issues before. New players to the game usually have to do something to get competitive in their game.

When I complained about the false advertising for a mid tower that was well shorter in LWD dimensions Phanteks said I should try to sell it. I don't trust these guys at all.

I usually use pcpartpicker.com and add all my components to see what they recommend with power. Don't know if its 100% accurate but at least gives me a good ball park estimate.

Eventually going to get a 4090, but it's going to be a while so I guess wait and get a ATX 3.0 PSU later? My current 750W Seasonic handles my 3070 Ti + 5800X3D fine
For a 4090, you should definitely wait for ATX 3.1 (upgraded GPU power connector, otherwise no difference). Products are launching soon.

You can find several of the A-tier ATX 3.0 1000W PSUs between $120-160.

My Seasonic-built Coolermaster V1000 struggles with an RTX 3080ti. Had to undervolt it for it to not shut off while gaming. Replaced it with a CWT-built MSI MPG A850G ATX 3.0 PSU and it has not shut down even with the GPU overclocked.
I have an old X-Series 850w Seasonic with a EVGA 3080ti FTW3 and it has held up fine with a 5900x. Have seen the GPU pull over 450w at times.

Fair enough to say you don't trust their service as a company, but Seasonic-based PSUs are solid PSUs regardless of who is selling them.

Corsair does not manufacture power supplies. They repackage OEM units just like Phanteks does, and Corsair does not always use high end platforms in their PSUs. For example, the lowest tier Seasonic is the tier C M12II Evo series that isn't even available anymore while Corsair CX-M and CV series are current tier C PSUs. At least none of Corsair's higher wattage PSUs are lower than tier C.

Transient spikes are much harder to detect without high performance equipment. They last for nanoseconds to milliseconds and can easily be 2-3 times the average power draw (for a stock 3080ti, that's 700-1050 watts). Many older power supplies would see the extreme spikes as short circuits and trigger the OCP.

It's also highly dependent on the game being played. Some games cause higher spikes than others, especially those without framerate limits.

The Thermaltake Smart 700W is budget tier and not the greatest, but tbh I don't expect that you'll have any issues with your existing PSU and that CPU/GPU combo. Both the 5800X3D and RTX 4070 range of GPUs are very efficient. This Phanteks PSU would be overkill for that system.

I just got RM750x for $135 for a NAS (may be a DAS) build, I wouldn't need 1000 watts...
My question is, which is a better power supply, this (PH-P1000G_02) or RM750x?

Mine had all flat cables + one sleeved 24-pin cable.
