How does this compare to the Baratza Encore? It seems at this prices point ($100-150) the Encore appears to be commonly recommended.

Avid slick-dealer here. I have this grinder and it has been incredible! Keeps static down. Gives lots of control for dialing in shots. And if you pair it with the partner espresso maker, it has some great feature for holding the portafliter. I also love how some of the tactile functions feel when using the machine. Would recommend highly!

Unrelated to deal question -

What happens when you get a bean-sized rock in your grinder? Does it grind it up, or somehow detect it and shut off, or does what some of the ceramic grinders like to do and break into many pieces?
I recommend not putting rocks in the grinder.

I would go w baratza, kind of like buying a weber grill- they sell replacement parts and last forever as long as you don't mind replacing worn out parts every xy years or so. kitchenaid I'm not really sure on long term.

I don't know, I usually just put coffee beans in mine.

I had one of these for a little over a year. It worked well but doesn't get very fine grind for espresso machines even at the lowest setting. (There is also some adjustment on the burr itself to make it even closer). Unfortunately, it didn't last and started slipping and eventually wore out a metal gear that was attached to the motor armature itself. I would have needed a new motor, but couldn't find any parts available. Just scrapped it and got a different unit.

The unit is otherwise very nice looking and worked well before it died. If you are just using it for coffee it probably will last forever, but my use was 99% for espresso.

This grinder has been used in my home daily for over 3 years. It's the quietest grinder I've ever owned and the static isn't terrible when dumping out the grinds. Would I use this to make perfect espresso - no. Does it make the best large grinds - no. It makes very consistent grinds for drip coffee makers, is very quiet doing it and doesn't make a huge mess. Those are wins for my mornings. If you want to also make espresso, get a Baratza encore when it's on sale.
