It doesn't technically work like that... It always broadcasts in the shifted 4k, as you get larger pixels become easier to see in theory, but you are usually really limited by brightness before that point matters as the larger the picture the more lumens you need (also the more you need a light controlled room...) however to calculate the throw distance for size of your room vs projected size see: https://www.projectorcentral.com/...o.htm#calc

I got the epson 3800 from the previous deal for 1399 New. Would it be wise to get this instead of 3800? I did not open the 3800 which is still withjn return period

Awhile back, I was deciding between the 3800, 4010 and the 5040ub. Epson had a refurbished 5040ub for $1100 shipped with an extra bulb offer at the time. I decided on that. My friend got a 4010 and I think the picture on the 5040ub is better. I'm thinking about upgrading to the 5050ub, just wish the refurb price was closer to $1800. If the extra $720 doesn't bother you, I'd definitely choose the 5050ub over the 3800.

If you can swing it, and can return the 3800, the 5050 is a much better PJ. I'm still waiting in vain for these to drop even lower when the 5050 replacement with HDMI 2.1 comes out (currently only the laser PJs have 2.1, the 3800 and 5050 have 2.0), but I'm *VERY* tempted by this price. The one advantage you'll have with the 3800 is lamps are about 1/3rd the price. (Edit: and if you have a lot of light intrusion the 3800 is technically brighter which helps in those casess) But the 5050 has a better lens, better black levels, and is more adjustable in terms of physical placement.

* Note that the replacement has not been announced but I suspect it will be released this year sometime which *should* drop the price on the 5050, but I'm Just clinging to that to prevent myself from upgrading yet as last year was expensive AF 🤣

Most sources I've seen seem to believe the Epson Laser projectors that have already released are the successors to the 5050ub. Sad because I was hoping for a real upgrade to my 5040ub with 3d, upgraded contrast and true 4k. The lasers seem to have gone backwards in contrast and dropped 3d. The 5050ub isn't enough of an upgrade to tempt me unless they dropped quite a bit more in price.

I'm hoping those sites are wrong and there will still be a flagship lamp-based projector for those of us who for whatever reason do not want to do laser (for me it's a warranty vs built in laser life issue as I watch my PJ like it's my full time job) but Epson has not said specifically either way presumably to not hurt sales of either.

In your case unless you REALLY want to game at 60 frames per second, there is very little reason to upgrade to the 5050 (I think the 5040 was HDMI 1.4 like the 4100 currently is?)
