No, and i wouldnt say 240mm is a "behemoth".
240mm is a "mid sized" cooler (it's what I'm using). My MSI motherboard has an auto-overclock feature, and it's tied into the cooling system with light color indicating temperature. It's cool when playing Cyberpunk 2077 on high detail and the coolant system is green, then it starts to turn yellow and the fans/pumps ramp up.

No, it's not needed as most people aren't overclocking their CPUs like that, but it's very cool to have.
If I was on AM5 or high-end 13 series I'd try to get a good cooler for a reasonable price and last I checked, this is still one of the best 240 AIOs you can buy. If you don't plan to overclock, at all, then look at the Thermalright Assassin and Phantom Spirit. Probably best bang for the buck right now.

Sale price has hovered around this mark a few times. Not for a while though, so pretty good pricing if you're looking. Great liquid cooler as well.

Are these behemoth coolers really necessary for the latest cpus amd & intel for normal use no overclocking?

My advice? Buy a good quality heatsink instead. Roughly the same price, much easier to service, fewer points of failure (no pump can die and leave you stranded, no water will evaporate). I've had both and I just buy Noctua heatsinks now.

Necessary? No. But most cpus don't come with a cooler anymore, and a decent cooler is going to be in this price range anyway. Might as well go AIO and have a cleaner looking case with potentially even better thermal management.

Don't get the same performance though. Also, I have been running my NZXT Kraken x52 for 7 years now and haven't had an issue. NZXT is also willing to send me an AM5 bracket for free as well.
