I'm thinking about doing this as well since my s22 battery is shit.
Mine S22 battery is done too so I purchased but in MA we have to pay tax on the MSRP before trade in. So mine was $380...

The Samsung trade-in deal is a horrible deal for many as you are trading a phone that's worth $500+ or more in excellent condition.
For instance, with the trade-in, the S24 5G costs close to the Samsung's retail price, $550 for an S23 5G plus $250 in cash payment = $800+/-.

This Fi deal is far better at only $350+$80 for the 4 month service.
So, you can get the S24 5G for free if you sell the S23 5G for a net price of $430 or more.
Do the math for your special situation and trade-in.

My job pays for my cell service / sim card. They give me a budget Samsung FE phone and I buy my own phone on my own dime so stuff like this is off the table for me, which sucks. If I paid my own bill I'd def go this route for sure.

Pulled the trigger last night when the site was finally not acting up.

I really dislike the Fold 4 and it's 100% because of how narrow and useless the front screen is.

What surprised me most was the TIV for the Fold 4 $600 and the S22U is $650.

I ended up using the S22U as trade-in. Also tried to get some Smartags but they were sold out by the time I tried checking out. I'm also not happy about the taxes as California taxes on the pre-discounted price of the phone. Paid $680 for everything.
Use the fold 4 as trade for wider cover screen fold 6. The values are better when you stay in the same product line/family. I paid around $650 going from fold 4 to 5 with education discount, getting $1k for the 4. If I recall, the 3 was getting almost the same, similar to how the s22s are getting nearly as much as the s23s. They want people to upgrade annually so they make the values on last year's reasonable but they REALLY don't want you waiting more than 2 years so they bring along the older models at well above market values to get you over the line. It's pretty normal marketing psychology stuff and not at all 'unfair'--you just have to decide if it's worth it to you to get a potentially awesome phone for a decent price or cut your losses

I agree with your overall point, but I'm not sure that your math is quite right.

For the base S24, Fi is giving back -$450, so net cost will be:
  • Phone = $410 ($860-450) plus
  • Tax on $859 (say 8% sales tax on average) = $69 plus
  • Service, which will require 5 months to reach 120 days because February is a 29 day month = $100
Total = $410 + $69 + $100 = $579.

If you go through Fi and clear $430 with the sale of your S23, your out-of-pocket will be ~$149 to upgrade.

If you go through Samsung, you'll end up paying ~$300 out-of-pocket, but you'll:
  1. get some free accessories
  2. won't have to deal with Google in cancelling
  3. won't have to deal with a private sale

Got 650 for the S22Ultra which is a pretty good deal, considering its like 350ish on Ebay, but yeah only offering 100 more for an S23 Ultra is a pretty big insult.

I think that's a good price. Note you still have $15 left of credit left over if you wanted to apply it to another accessory.
Thanks man. Will miss the microSD card on my old phone.

Taxes have been left out for obvious reasons!
They all depend on location.
For instance in CA one must pay tax on the item's original price, NOT the after-discount price.
In other states tax is only on the after-discount price, and in some states there's no tax.
Buying from Samsung has the same tax consequences.

That's why I said:
"Do the math for your special situation and trade-in."
Even if one keeps the Fi service for 5 months it's only $20 more.

We have 7 lines; unlimited data/voice is important to me.
To have a similar on prepaid plan, you'd have to pay $65/month x 7 = $455/month vs we're playing approximately $160/month after corporate discounts.
Valid point. They do seem to have much better deals for people who need multiple lines. Not so much for those of us who only need one.

With CB site, appears so, unless you get the $25 samsung popup in the app.
