How do you get this to work if you only keep it for 4 months?
Thought it's a 24 Month Bill credit?

Just order the s24 Ultra with 650 off, I always have a Fi account that I keep around with it paused in case I need it for global travel roaming,

I did the last s23 ultra deal with 0% 24 months payment so my account always get a $25 bill and I do unpause the service every now and then for 1-2 days and pay $2 for it.

I wonder if Google is going to do the crazy trade in deals like last year (where I basically swapped a 4a for a 6a for free), and paid $49 for a Pixel 7 with an iPhone SE trade-in. Haven't much seen anything remotely resembling that deal since

I did exactly the same thing as OP and just paid $690 for yellow S24 ultra. I reactivated my account and the offer was right there.

It doesn't matter, after you reactivate your account, go to Fi app and add your esim. It might take few tries.

Question is, when reactivating its ordering a free physical sim when I select byop. Wondering if that step is necessary.

Did you activate service on the Google account that had Fi associated with it before more than six month ago, or was it an account with a paused Fi service. I have an account where Fi was active in late 2022, contemplating activating Fi service on a device with an eSIM to see what happens.

Yes, from the previous promo for s23 ultra. Got a new number, physical sim, then went ahead and activated through the fi app.
