I do not recommend Spectrum Mobile. They are an MVNO on Verizon towers and when the network is congested, you have little to no connection because your priority is so low. There is also no upgrade option for a prioritized connection. I dropped them after 1 month.
I test with the following tiv samsung phones:

A14 $714
A54 $770
S23fe $880
S23+ $994
Trade in my Google Pixel 6A for $757 that I originally got from metro for $50 years ago. Makes this a true slickdeal 🫡

You can ask a Spectrum service rep to refund the trade-in credit directly to the credit card you used if you paid full price up front for the phone.
It says

"Promotion requires enrollment in a 36 mos. Device Payment Plan. If mobile service is canceled, remaining balance on Device Payment Plan becomes due"

So to me, it sounds like you aren't eligible for the credit if you buy it outright

So the $50 Amex Spectrum deal is still available? I have the basic Amex no-fee credit card and it seems I never get the deals that are posted here on SD.
I have 16 cards and only found it on 1 card. Amex offers are always YMMV there's no way to know why some get them all and some get none.

There is no notion of 36 month DPP. Maybe Spectrum added the 36 month later once they figured out this thread?
Just chatted with a Spectrum rep and he/she mentioned that DPP credits will only apply if you purchase under a DPP plan. If you purchase in full, credits will be applied in full.

Other comments here suggest otherwise.

I don't know why they would do that. If this was the case, everyone would just take their $100 s24 and cancel the service right away. Spectrum would lose money…
This is only available to Spectrum internet customers and they are already fleecing their internet customers. Also, if you have their internet, they are offering unlimited mobile phone service for $15 per month, which is good enough of a deal that many people will probably stay on it.

i did the Pixel 8 deal a few months ago. I accidentally did the payment plan. I went in and paid off the phone in full and talked to a rep in chat and they refunded all of the credit amount back to the credit card without any issue.

SD just a minority. Not everyone get the phone and cancel. Just look up metropcs deal. I have been doing metro deals for the past 10 years. They are still offering free phones.

Did you have to pay tax on the full original price of the phone?

i have spectrum already with a line but I plan to cancel spectrum altogether (frontier offered me a much better deal). Can I get a new line and then cancel the whole service and still get it unlocked?

This has been mention many times now. 60 days active service to unlock.

but there has also been a few mentions of no need for active service...e.g. if these are verizon phones...verizon doesn't need 60 days of active service, just 60 days from activation

Although the unlock policy states minimum 60 days, to not arouse suspicion of you not having any intention of staying with Spectrum Mobile from the get go, you're gonna want to eat the minimum plan for about 3 months ($14 x 3 months). On Day 61, call/chat to request the permanent unlock, ride out a few more days of your last paid month, then cancel the plan entirely.
