If you are trading in on the spot, you get the bonus value right then and there.
I would not choose monthly payments, as I've read that the credit would be spread over 36 months, not all at once.
On all other big carrier threads (Vz, Tmo, ATT from carrier) if you choose to finance, all credits are spread over that time which is synonymous with "being on a contract for that time period".
Spectrum might be different, but I honestly don't think they are.

Can anyone speak to that?
Do I just go in and say "hey, I'd like to trade in these phones and do upgrades on existing lines that I just opened yesterday"?

"Your offer may be adjusted based on the condition of your device. If you accept the offer, you'll either receive a credit in the form of a refund to the same credit card you used to purchase the new device or it can be applied to your Device Payment Plan. If you decline the offer, Assurant will mail your device back to you. If your adjusted offer is $0, you will no longer receive a promotional credit for your trade-in device"
