Not sure what variety this tree is, but it looks like it's a lila avocado. All avocados are hard to grow in zone 8. They will definitely need protection once you get anywhere below 30f. The other big thing about avocados is that they need good drainage. If you have clay soil, then this isn't an option for you and might need to consider a large container. Even if the tree services zone8, you have to remember that the fruit won't develop correctly in cold temperatures once they reach temps into the 20s. Most of the avocado fruit is usually ready around the end of winter, which makes it difficult to harvest. I recommend growing these in zone 9 or above.

Grow it for fun, not for fruit production. You will never recover what you spent for the amount of perceived savings from the fruit that you will consume in the future.

If you like, just peel the outer layer of the seed and place with soil it on a 3/5 gal pot. Water it often and you should have a 3 feet tree in 6 months.

Can't ship to California, would have jumped on it if it was possible.

Ordered the avocado tree from them about 2 years ago. Bought the "warranty."

Shipping and all that stuff was great.

I live in Northern FL which is in the zone for this tree.

Had the first one die. Filed a warranty claim and even though it was a little past the expiration they honored that.

That one died too.

Company is great- would and have done business with them again. Not saying they ship bad avocado trees but I've had 0 luck with them. Would love to try again but I'm not sure why I expect a different result.
I have also purchased from them before (mostly privacy trees). I had one that had a rough time during shipping and they replaced it no problem. I like them for the convenience and not getting my car super dirty.

I tried an avocado tree once (not from FGT) and it did not make it through the winter, even bringing it inside my garage. I think avocados are just finicky in general.

Cold hardy doesn't mean freezing. Check your zone first.

Mine is 10 years old from a pit, located in South Florida at about 12 feet. Not a single flower yet

Hi! Ok so I live in Orlando Florida and dream of growing avocados.. what's the fastest way to get there? Nursery? Didn't seem this is a great deal if it only saves me 6 months. I'm old and want to enjoy fresh avocados before I kick the bucket lol. Thank you

I tried a Meyer lemon from them. When it died they wanted pictures of it and when I emailed them they denied my claim because there was a vent within 2ft of it. I live in the Midwest, and it's pretty standard practice that there's a vent under windows so I'm not sure where they expect people to put them.

My wife always tries to grow them from seed. They grow quick in water. But once winter hits, they die. I think it's because my house gets too cold by the window. But if i put it out further, it won't get enough sunlight.

Yeah what's the reason now? Pesticides? I'm sick of CA but got no choice, the wife wants to stay here. Definitely won't be eating out much now that minimum wage is $20/hr for fast food worker
Not only diseases, but insect pests that could destroy the CA citrus industry.

You can find vendors that do ship to California, but they need to have the trees inspected and some firms do not want to pay for that.

Along with citrus and avocado being available at your local Home Depot.

Note that the minimum wage is for large corporations only. Just go to a locally owned restaurant.

False. Growing from seeds will take forever to even sprout. And if they sprout, takes them a long time to grow 12 inches and still hard to keep them alive in soil. They will also take up to 13 years to fruit from seeds if anyone can successfully kept them alive from seeds.

Fast growing trees is the name of the seller and not by any mean fast growing avocado trees they're selling. For those wanting Myers lemon trees, wait another month and check your Costco warehouses. They usually have citrus (kumquats, orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc.) around February for around $25-$30. They do go really fast too, so keep a look out for them at Costco.

Hardy down to 20 degrees, but in PA you will need to bring it indoors during the winter.
