I think most banana trees will die back pretty hard in zone 7. I'm 7B and while some do okay, they have a lot of regrouping every year to do.

I have a meyer lemon and two plums I got on sale from FGT. They are generally high priced but honestly the plums are doing very well at about a year and a half in and they were larger than most other bare root types I've seen.

That said generally speaking I think Stark Bros is a better value, and you can normally get decent fig trees at Lowes very inexpensively.
Thanks, I'll check out Stark Bros!

BTW, people around me, Raleigh NC area, seem to have great luck with banana tress. They look like DEAD over the winter but always bounce back in the spring.

I see lots of complaints but no alternative suggestions.

Can anyone recommend a source for banana trees for Zone 7? Plenty of nights below freezing but rarely 10F or below.

And yes, I know Walmart, Lowes, HD all sell trees but they are rarely regionally appropriate.
We stayed at a nice "Off the grid" airbnb place once. They had a nice "greenhouse/ warm area" connected to the house. 8 feet of snow outside and we had fresh bananas and all sorts of produce inside. I know that's not possible for everyone but I've been harvesting Meyer Lemons and Parisian Limes inside since. Just need a full spectrum glow lamp and a place to stick it. Keep it kinda warm and trimmed back and you should be good. I had a mango tree and an avocado tree but they both croaked on me. My fault though. Anyway my .02

Even after discount it is expensive; 3 Gallon fig comes to $112; local nursery has 5 Gallon for $40. If you have a local landscape company they charge $59 for the 5 Gallon Fig tree (but you have to buy their service), No comparison. Probably this will be useful for someone who doesn't have a nursery in the driving distance.

Japanese Beetles love this fruit. They come in droves every year to feast on it. Don't buy if you don't want dumb bunny beetles bumping into everything around your yard. Lol

Tale as old as time, and universal no matter what product we're talking about.

If you bought a tree and it died, $100 for a stick, are you going to go online and complain?

If you ordered a tree and it's thriving a year later, are you thinking about going to BBB to give them a great review?

it is what it is, and there's a lot going on when it comes to growing trees and surviving extreme cold and heat.

Personally, I ordered a Peter's Honey Fig from them last year, and it's still alive. I followed the included instructions and put in the ground about 15 minutes after it was delivered.
Generally speaking I tend to follow this type of advice anywhere the margin for user error is high. Gardening is a great example, home networking gear another. You get a lot of loud complaints from people who really had no idea what they were doing who were largely responsible for the negative outcome.

Having said that - this company's reviews seem to be even worse than could be reasoned to user error. I've bought three items from here in the past, and they were hit or miss. One frost free gardenia was anything but (despite being planted in the spring and well cared for), one Meyer lemon tree is doing well in a container, and a pomegranate tree that I had ordered arrived DOA and it was a real ordeal to try to get a refund from them. That was the last straw for me.

trees are not crappy, just insanely overpriced
I found it to be the same price or slightly cheaper to go to local greenhouse/nursery. But it's often what they have in stock plus you have to bring it back yourself which might annoy some people.

Musa basjoo would be your best bet but would still need to be protected and the bananas have seeds if you get it to fruit. We got a musa orinoco to fruit in eastern NC but we had to cut it back, wrap it with pine straw, and wrap it with incandescent lights to keep it above freezing. The fruit never fully ripened. Www.bananas.org has a lot of people growing in a lot of places.

If you are looking for cold resistant fruiting Banana trees, buy a Mekong Giant - https://www.briansbotanicals.net/...t-pp24315/

If you are able to bring inside for the winter, you may also try a dwarf cavendish - https://www.starkbros.com/product...nana/24358

My local nursery sell them for $40. I just buy cuttings for $12 for a pack of 10. They root so easily

Hm. Surprised to see so many negative comments. I've purchased a weeping willow, pear, avocado tree, two of these fig trees, and a significant number of roses/other flowering trees/bushes.

The only problem i had was the avocado came with a bunch of mealy bugs that took a ton of effort to get rid of (luckily I noticed befor I brought it indoors).

Pear tree also died but that was my own fault running into it with lawnmower lol.

Generally very happy with the company (although I agree they can be pricey if you don't catch a sale)

The website says that the discount code has reached its limit. Personally I would rather overpay over at Stark Bros… An apple tree they sent me died, and they sent another one no questions asked other than pictures.
Overpay at starkbros? I find a lot of their trees are cheap, especially with their sales. I got a persimon tree from them on sale for $35 and it fruited the first year
