I don't find the fans to be noisy... it has a fan, it is cooling 30W+ of heat from the system... so you will hear it. But it's not unreasonable.
I personally love it. I'm posting from it right now.
Prior to this, I was using a 12C Xeon workstation with 64gb of ram and a RX580 video card. It was loud, a power hog and heated the room badly. This is quiet, cooler, performs arguably better (geekbench, cinebench, games, etc.), and I can carry it around if I want to play video games on the couch.
One thing that is critical to keep in mind is that you have to do everything through USB-C (one reason I picked this over the Asus was it has 2 ports), and the 16GB of ram is split between the system and the video.... so if you can temper your expectations with those in mind, it's a slick machine.

Speaking from owning an ROG Ally perspective, the software is important in the sense that a decent front-end can make the experience easier to stomach on a Windows 11 gaming device. The screens on these devices are way too small to navigate by using the cursor, tapping the screen, and doing all the normal stuff on a Windows 11 desktop. A decent front-end allows you to operate the handheld more like a dedicated gaming device where most of your input is via the controller.

If you like tinkering (I do) then this won't be a problem. I have a steam deck but wanted more power, and something that could natively play my gamepass games.
It is gigantic, and almost 2 pounds. Long play sessions definitely do dig into the palm of your hand at certain angles. Also the back button placement on the detachable controllers bothered me. The 1600p screen is gorgeous, but you're likely going to play games at 800p. If you do, you'll get some great performance out of it, but for my taste even with things like linear scaling on, it was too blurry for me. I ended up returning it as it was just too large and heavy, and was hard for me to find a place for it in my gaming habits. It definitely is reaching that laptop level of weight and size. It is a great device, but I couldn't justify it when I have a gaming laptop and a steamdeck already. If they make it lighter, change the controller shape so it digs in to the hand less, and change button placement on the next iteration of this, I'll give it a whirl. If you don't have a handheld, and are fine tinkering, I would go with the Go. Just realize your sacrificing things like portability for the giant display. If you dont want to tinker, get a steam deck.

I was using my iPhone + backbone which is great but they pulled GTA from game pass and it was still laggy.
Would this be something that would help me play games discretely?
Can it run GTA 5 and games like it natively?
Maybe I just need a gaming PC as Total War/Strategy is one of my other interests next to open world games.
