Your steam deck is a much more capable emulation device so the question for you is do you want this smaller and much less powerful device with Sony style controls? This is much more reasonable to toss in a pocket or leave in the bathroom or whatever.

You are much better off with an RGB30 imo. Better screen and better support. This is a cheap device sent out to die by Anbernic.

Both the RGB30 and this device can only play 4:3 games anyways so it makes more sense to get the one with the better quality screen.

For those who have really dug in on this stuff, what's the higher quality - but still at or under $100 - option? It'd be for the kiddos. I/they have a modded 3ds xl already.

You have a modded 3DS that can most likely play GBA games and older consoles.

Personally 2GB is the minimum IMO for emulation up to on N64/Dreamcast + running Android.

I wouldn't spend $59 on this device for just 1GB of ram.

That's not 100% correct. I just completed a return/refund on a faulty unit I had from LITB, and shipped to Portland OR ($13, from East Coast). The whole process was way easier than I had expected. They refunded device and my shipping costs. Would gladly do business again. For reference the unit was the PowKitty X55 off SD a few weeks back.

I think the parameters you set don't exist. You can get Retro Pocket 2S or RGB30 (under $100). However, anything more serious (say, gamecube and up emulation) probably go straight to to steam deck (lcd in $3XX range). That's the way. You can possibly look at Retro Pocket 3S / 4 / 4 Pro, but those run $100-$200 and I don't think the value is there for strictly for emulation purposes.

The problem with Chinese components are that they can have cheap parts and we do not yet know the longevity of these gadgets. I do not have faith that they will last long, even if the hardware is ok the software support is minimal. Having bought clones for past 10 years on other gadgets, there is a qualitative difference that justify the premium cost of the brand names. It matters on how much you value emulation. I think they are fun but their fun factor do not last too long so we tend to want to hack around, not play around.
