Problem with that model is you have to manually engage dolby vision for each dics - totaly bonkers.
You don't think you will regret that decision as they censor, make unavailable and edit "politically incorrect" scenes out of all your digital content in the coming years?
Year ago I'd laugh at a dvd player. I pulled mine back out and cancelled all these streaming services.

Yep.

And leaving Dolby Vision set to on for HDR and HDR10+ films still doesn't change the quality of the image noticeably.
Well at least we can agree your "Most TVs are already inherently inaccurate unless you spend hundreds on a professional calibration" statement was wrong and inaccurate!

It is fine if you don't see any ill effects from leaving DV on when the material doesn't support it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I have seen it first hand and it wasn't pretty.

I've been watching prices for a few years now (bought a couple movies that were 4K, more or less accidentally), and I haven't seen too much price reduction -- the sweet spot for a player with the "right" features has hovered around $400. Since they aren't widely adopted with the trend favoring streaming, I don't think there's much economy of scale going on and little incentive to drop the price.
My old Sony Blu-Ray player did have a menu with many streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Crackle. Of course those kind of features are pretty pointless now since every modern 4K TV has either Android TV, Google TV, or Roku TV built in. I would assume the average person doesn't care if this Panasonic 4K UHD Blu-Ray player has Dolby Vision. The quality of the image with HDR10 isn't going to be much different.

Actually, regarding HDR content, how well the player tone maps it determines the quality.
Since there is no standard on how to do it, it will be different.
That's a main difference between players.

If you're building a dedicated theater room, get a player that has Dolby Vision. This doesn't have that. Dolby Vision is the best form of HDR. It has far more colors and better contrast than HDR10/HDR10+. You're not getting the most out of your setup if you don't get something that supports it. That's assuming your TV supports it.

If you're building that, why are you buying a UHD blu ray player for $129? To see what Dolby vision looks like, you must have a Dolby vision compatible TV, a Dolby vision compatible receiver to carry the video signal, and has the Dolby Atmos well. Then you will need about 9 to 11 speakers for that. There are some UHD blu ray players featured 2 HDMI outputs, one for video, one for sound If you want a more economical system with just TV and sound bar, but the cost won't be anything around $129. This player is an internet ready player, meaning you must physically connect it to an ethernet port for streaming, no wireless internet connection.

Panasonic must be making a killing on Blu-ray players. With all the advances in tech hardware, $129 should be the high-end, not entry-level.

Do 4k players tend to go down in price over time? Not sure I need one now, might pick one up later like close to the holidays maybe.
The regular prices probably won't go down. These are niche products now. And they don't get annual updates like TVs. So there's no pressure to sell off old SKUs to make room for new models.

However, there were some pretty steep discounts around Black Friday this past year. So if you're willing to wait 10 months, you can likely get a better price, or a better player for a similar price.

For those not willing to wait that long, this is a good deal.

Honest question:

If I wish to buy 4k 120hz tv does it has to say "Dolby ready/support" for the UB820 player?

I'm waiting for my 8 year old 55" Samsung 4k TV soft HDR 60hz (model # KU6300) to die so I have a just reason to buy a better 4k OLED(?) TV preferably from Sony and then get the UB820 player for the best audio/visual experience.

I may be wrong but I'm realizing that the ub820 player would be a bad buy for me right now with the current aging tv. Your thoughts? Curious to hear yours.

Nope, use grey market apps... every show/movie is free.
"Just use piracy, duh!" is a pretty useless threadcrap. The quality is not as good, lots of obscure stuff is not on the grey market apps, and you still don't own anything from those apps. They could remove stuff at any time and you're screwed.

Just to be clear, are you referencing activities that are 100% legal? Comparing illegal actions to legal ones is like comparing apples to oranges.

More like comparing apples at Walmart to apples on a tree.
