Pretty sure it cost money many years ago but now I do believe you are correct. Looks like I already 'owned' it on GOG. Also currently free on Steam so added it to my account because...why not

I religiously played this game starting when it was released. It's always been free. Great game though.

I don't think it was always free, I remember buying the disc and then giving it to everyone I knew and generating new CD keys. So, I guess it was free for everyone except me lol

I used to play this game a ton a million years ago and there's no way I paid for it at that point and I don't believe I pirated it either. But hey, free is free.

This brings back memories. This was always free, if I remember right. It was mid-2000s since I've played. Used to play this all the time then.

What you had was Return to Castle Wolfenstein. When it came out, it had the multiplayer mode on it that required CD-keys and whatnot. Later on they spun-off the multiplayer mode into Wolf:ET, which was always free.

Yeah, it was always free: "The game was originally planned to be released as a retail expansion pack to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, then as a standalone expansion with a single-player campaign. The current version was released in 2022 along with four official dedicated servers.

Thanks for all the feedback. Didn't realize it was F2P. Looks like there are a lot of memories floating around though so glad to jog those. 🙂

So guessing this is the "Quake Live" of the Wolfenstein franchise?
