What do you use this for? Can't you get a Google Voice number for free?

Looks like it's intended for small businesses to more professionally handle calls, faxes, etc. It's got automated routing & all the other basic stuff one would expect of a business, allowing even just one person to seem like they have multiple staff & departments. I can definitely see this being useful for someone who doesn't want to spend much time setting up & managing that stuff while getting their business off the ground.

I've been using voip.ms for years to replace my landline. You pay by the minute so it ends up costing less than $25/year for my usage (that's including the DID, dial in direct number). There's various forwarding, routing, and SMS type options.

Google Voice is still an okay product atm, but Google has been alternating between ignoring it and actively trying to ruin it for years. I've been keeping an eye on Grasshopper as a future replacement. For most I think voice still manages to be a better product though and obviously still free.

I use Google Voice, the business version, and it's been rock solid. Have options for redirects and prompts. Overall happy with it so far. I don't see why anyone would use this, but clearly it's a business so somebody finds it useful.

Hopefully they can tell us why.

Grasshopper app was horrible on both iOS and Android. I could never get a call to go out on the first try and always had to call customers back because they couldn't hear me or if I answered it would hang up on them. I switched to Dialpad and had a much better experience, but it was a pain in the rear to get grasshopper to authorize the port and then they kept billing me after the port and cancellation. Third cancellation was the charm and they did eventually refund the 4 extra months the billed me. Dialpad was more reliable, but eventually I just ported the number to a wireless carrier where I got a free 5th line.

If no other reason, some of us try to avoid Big Brother's little brother Google.

Sign up for VOIP yourself and manage through a more complicated panel but with more features. One vendor, as an example, I used: VoIP.ms You pay for use, so generally the bills are not flat fee, but, nevertheless, are tiny.

Per local number:
85 cents a month

Make calls:
Starting at 1 cent a minute

Receive calls:
Starting at 1/9 of a cent a minute

I do too, but there's just no alternative as good unfortunately. On top of it, smaller companies are likely more susceptible to loss of data. 😭
