After giving up on Sony, I went with the "fan favorite" Panasonic UB820. I haven't had any issues with it, and it just generally looks better with both 4K discs and upscaling standard blu-rays. Also something to keep in mind with the UB820 is that it's one of the Panasonic players that lets you bypass some region locks on Region B/C discs.
These players are just very hit or miss, some are good, others aren't.
If you buy, play some 4k discs during your return window and make sure ya got a good one

It's best for slickdealers to simply wait until they are $100 or $50, imo.
"LOL LOL" !!!!!
lol yes I wouldn't pay the "high price" for a product designed to play games and happens to play movie disc either!
Especially when the quality is inferior to a much less expensive product designed to play movie disc!
Let's not forget that high priced inferior product doesn't support DV disc content!
Let me guess you stream 4k into a $700 4k display and "high priced" Atmos soundbar and it's exactly the same as disc!๐

"If you're also a gamer, it may be worth taking a look at the Xbox One S, which can play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR10, and costs just a touch more than the UBP-X700."
Hmm, that's an oddly not-glowing statement in an otherwise glowing review. You can get XB1S's used for $50 all over the place. No DV, though.
Had this player for a few years. It's no frills, ugly menus, but who cares it's DV for cheap. It's fine. No playback issues with 30+ different discs. All good.
We can't answer your first question unless we know your tv is capable of playing DV content. If it is, then the player will send that signal and you're all good.
I sold my Sony and got the Panasonic because it's been reliable every single time. I don't have to manually switch between DV and HDR. If Sony had better QA this would not have been an issue. My PS3 was my very first Blu-ray player bought it used in 2010 and it's still going strong 14 years later. Thing is loud as a jet unfortunately.
In order to play a disc, you would need something to put the disc into right? Hence for people who prefer physical media, they will still be a need for disc players even in 2024 and beyond.

Sony players are the only ones that require you to manually switch DV on/off.
Your display does not change that while playing physical media.
The controversy/debate is what happens if you just leave DV on.
I provided what Sony themselves says what happens if you do.
