This *can* be a good deal, but you need to be smart about how you are using the points.

We just came back from Nice (Frnace) where we paid about 11,000 points per night. The cheapest cash price on non-cancellable room (same hotel, same dates) would've been $85 + fees and taxes. Cancellable rate was about $95 + fees and taxes. Basically I got about 1 cent per dollar. I should mention I do have IHG credit card which gives me 4th night free when paying with points, which is one of the reasons the rate was this low.

At the end of November we stayed in Holiday Inn Express close to Universal Studios Florida for about 11,500 points per night (also would've been about $100 + fees & taxes if paying cash). That was also after 4th night free.

However when we looked at booking a room in Phoenix in March, the cheapest was 28,000pts/night and up from there (that's also after 4th night free). Cash prices were just a bit over $100 on the cheapest properties. That's a bad value, so we didn't book it.

So IHG points can be worth about 1 cent per point if you:

1. Have an IHG credit card (from Chase) and get 4th night free when paying with points
2. Choose your dates and properties carefully.

Also you have to book way in advance (like several months in advance) because properties "sell out" of "reward nights" (nights you can pay with points). So a hotel might have rooms available but you won't be able to use rewards on dates close to travel.

I don't think I would be buying the points unless I had a specific property and redemption in mind in near future due to points devluation. But in general it is a good deal.

Is this really a deal when points are devalued day by day? I think ihg hotels are upwards of 60k points these days per night

11,000 + 11,000 bonus = $126.50
22,000 + 22,000 bonus = $253.00
26,000 + 26,000 bonus = $260.00
27,000 + 27,000 bonus = $270.00
same for anything above this amount

Sample rates:
$225 per night hotel costs 43,000 points
$292 per night hotel costs 57,000 points

doesn't seem like a good deal. Seems like regular price.

Could be a deal if you are planning travel and are going to use the points very soon. Earn 'em and burn 'em.

Absolutely; also they are not unlike airline tickets (or most anything) the earlier you book, the better the price.

Best thing about IHG, imho, is the 4 nights for the price of 3 reward nights.

Depends on where and when you are going. Compare the cash price to points price.

I usually always come out ahead booking with points. Can also stack with Stay 3 nights get 4th free and 10% back if you have the IHG credit cards.

You need to have their credit card active to use that 4th night free benefit, which is a sweet sweet benefit.
also ihg credit card is one of the best hotel cards to keep.

$99 fee per year and you get 1 free award night certificate which can be used at Ulta premium properties, and can cost up to 40k points. Those rooms are usually $350 and up, even up to $1k sometimes.

I keep trying to refer my friends and family to this card, but those people just don't care. guess they must hate me enough to not want me earning referral bonuses.

There are other examples where it is a deal.

For example, we are staying at a place where one night is 63,000 points or $455 a night.

64,000 points is $320 and you don't pay tax usually with points.

We also get 4th night free, so points daily is lower than the 63,000

FYSA, concur with others. I went deep on IHG points and have come to discover the fine print will kill you; they've also been seriously devaluing points over the past couple of years.

As others pointed out, you have to really work for a 'deal' using points now with IHG. Only makes sense for highly specific scenarios (e.g. 400$ a night resort points buy outside of their blackout dates.
Compared to most other hotel brands, much worse (unfortunately for me, little diamond ambassador me)

IHG switched to a dynamic pricing model for point stays a couple of years ago, so if staying during high demand nights (or seasons) you're going to use more points for the stay. I don't stay at the resorts or luxury properties but a Holiday Inn or Express is usually 20k-30k points.

I remember fondly the time IHG was giving away points if you send them a notecard. The loophole was there seemed to be no limit so people were sending in tons of notecard and got tons of free points.

Now SD is on the track of selling points; I thought we had TPG for that sh. It's almost never a good idea to buy points or miles for any airline or hotel program. There are exceptions, but get your advice about points, miles, and credit cards in travel forums. You will be tricked here
