This *can* be a good deal, but you need to be smart about how you are using the points.

We just came back from Nice (Frnace) where we paid about 11,000 points per night. The cheapest cash price on non-cancellable room (same hotel, same dates) would've been $85 + fees and taxes. Cancellable rate was about $95 + fees and taxes. Basically I got about 1 cent per dollar. I should mention I do have IHG credit card which gives me 4th night free when paying with points, which is one of the reasons the rate was this low.

At the end of November we stayed in Holiday Inn Express close to Universal Studios Florida for about 11,500 points per night (also would've been about $100 + fees & taxes if paying cash). That was also after 4th night free.

However when we looked at booking a room in Phoenix in March, the cheapest was 28,000pts/night and up from there (that's also after 4th night free). Cash prices were just a bit over $100 on the cheapest properties. That's a bad value, so we didn't book it.

So IHG points can be worth about 1 cent per point if you:

1. Have an IHG credit card (from Chase) and get 4th night free when paying with points
2. Choose your dates and properties carefully.

Also you have to book way in advance (like several months in advance) because properties "sell out" of "reward nights" (nights you can pay with points). So a hotel might have rooms available but you won't be able to use rewards on dates close to travel.

I don't think I would be buying the points unless I had a specific property and redemption in mind in near future due to points devluation. But in general it is a good deal.

Is this really a deal when points are devalued day by day? I think ihg hotels are upwards of 60k points these days per night

11,000 + 11,000 bonus = $126.50
22,000 + 22,000 bonus = $253.00
26,000 + 26,000 bonus = $260.00
27,000 + 27,000 bonus = $270.00
same for anything above this amount

Sample rates:
$225 per night hotel costs 43,000 points
$292 per night hotel costs 57,000 points

doesn't seem like a good deal. Seems like regular price.

Now SD is on the track of selling points; I thought we had TPG for that sh. It's almost never a good idea to buy points or miles for any airline or hotel program. There are exceptions, but get your advice about points, miles, and credit cards in travel forums. You will be tricked here
tricked here? i put this info out, you can do what you want with it. just like any other deals here, a completely free forum where you're not required to pay for a subscription or membership, you can thumb it down or thumb it up. no one's forcing you to "get tricked".

i originally posted this in the travel deals forum where no one looks. then there might be a benefit to slickdealers who are short on points so i moved it to hot deals.

IHG switched to a dynamic pricing model for point stays a couple of years ago, so if staying during high demand nights (or seasons) you're going to use more points for the stay. I don't stay at the resorts or luxury properties but a Holiday Inn or Express is usually 20k-30k points.
I've stayed at Kimpton's as low as 35k points.

The dynamic points can work you in your favor. Just don't do dumb stuff and plan accordingly. Planning on traveling during peak times like Memorial Day weekend and complaining about a holiday inn in downtown Charleston costing 100k a night is just piss poor planning.

I've also stayed at intercontinental overseas at 90k for 4 nights due to the 4th night free while holding the card.

IHG is still valuable if you plan right. I have more issues with mariott and Hilton personally.

Got the Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill for 5 nights in late September. 208000 points. No taxes or fees. FWIW, IHG is based in London and they have numerous properties there. Probably on par with NYC for high room night costs. If we decide to stay 8 nights, will try to do two reservations to pay for 6 nights.

Do you know if I can get the card, and then modify and existing reservation to get the 4th night for free?

How much is 60K points?
The Points Guy values IHG points at .5 cents each. 60K points is then the dollar equivalent of $300. I'm finding The Points Guy values are fairly accurate if you know what you're doing when choosing when and how you use those points.

I don't fear that people will be necessarily be tricked here at SD but I think you are right to suggest that folks do their research on TPG and other travel forums regarding points use. You must understand the points currency of whatever loyalty program you are using to determine when you are getting a good deal or if you should just pay cash and save your points for another day. I've never been a fan of purchasing points. For this IHG points offer you are actually purchasing the IHG points at the exact value (.5 cents each) that TPG values them. Why would you trade hard earned cash for a points currency that IHG controls on every property? Why trade $1,000 cash for $1,000 worth of IHG points? You will have to fight tooth and nail to use your points wisely in order to get back the same value you purchased them for so why is that a slick deal? When I look at my points in my accounts, I know they were all given to me for free. I don't want to mix purchased points with free points because it's difficult to determine the real value you gained from your points IMO.

I say often and numerous rooms are $20k points

Also, I am not seeing this offer.
20-25k is my usual redeem for normal Holiday Inn Express or Candlewood rooms. Sometimes I get rooms for 15-18k per night. I don't stay in hotspots though. I'd rather drive an extra 5-10 miles than spend 2x points per night.

To me this deal is more or less of a push and not worth buying since I have so many for staying in IHG properties for work. One thing to understand is having points doesn't mean you can stay any place you want. You can also stay somewhere with money, but you can't always stay somewhere for points. Sometimes the Chase free night and point hotels don't overlap on the same dates.

I booked recently for Gulf Shores….spent too many points, but rooms were $400- $500 a night, so I did save a lot with points.

Depends on where you stay. I've used points to book a hotel during long road trips for 10,000 to 14,000 points. That's about $100 and no taxes.

For everyone out there wondering whether this is a good deal or not - it usually depends on where you're going to stay. If you are seeking a premium destination or resort type of place, then it will most definitely not be a good deal. But if you need a comfortable place to stay in the middle of a long road trip, then it is great.

For example, Holiday Inn Express on the PA Turnpike is 14,000 per night. The same room is $110 after taxes.
