This *can* be a good deal, but you need to be smart about how you are using the points.

We just came back from Nice (Frnace) where we paid about 11,000 points per night. The cheapest cash price on non-cancellable room (same hotel, same dates) would've been $85 + fees and taxes. Cancellable rate was about $95 + fees and taxes. Basically I got about 1 cent per dollar. I should mention I do have IHG credit card which gives me 4th night free when paying with points, which is one of the reasons the rate was this low.

At the end of November we stayed in Holiday Inn Express close to Universal Studios Florida for about 11,500 points per night (also would've been about $100 + fees & taxes if paying cash). That was also after 4th night free.

However when we looked at booking a room in Phoenix in March, the cheapest was 28,000pts/night and up from there (that's also after 4th night free). Cash prices were just a bit over $100 on the cheapest properties. That's a bad value, so we didn't book it.

So IHG points can be worth about 1 cent per point if you:

1. Have an IHG credit card (from Chase) and get 4th night free when paying with points
2. Choose your dates and properties carefully.

Also you have to book way in advance (like several months in advance) because properties "sell out" of "reward nights" (nights you can pay with points). So a hotel might have rooms available but you won't be able to use rewards on dates close to travel.

I don't think I would be buying the points unless I had a specific property and redemption in mind in near future due to points devluation. But in general it is a good deal.

Is this really a deal when points are devalued day by day? I think ihg hotels are upwards of 60k points these days per night

11,000 + 11,000 bonus = $126.50
22,000 + 22,000 bonus = $253.00
26,000 + 26,000 bonus = $260.00
27,000 + 27,000 bonus = $270.00
same for anything above this amount

Sample rates:
$225 per night hotel costs 43,000 points
$292 per night hotel costs 57,000 points

doesn't seem like a good deal. Seems like regular price.

This is a decent deal if you will use it in the next 6-12 months. I just used 26K points a few weeks ago for Holiday Inn Times Square for a Saturday night - not fancy and no breakfast but right in the middle of the action and no "resort fees".

My latest redemption@IC Osaka.
Cash price $1792.
Redeemed 200k points.
~.009 c/p.
Great value in my case. Only drawback is room type availability is usually limited to basic rooms.

I have the ihg credit card and recently stayed at the crown plaza in Ventura California, got a Saturday night for 25k points and bought 25k points for a family member for $125. Cash price was $190ish so saved about $70 that way, and with the credit card they upgraded us to suites and gave us 4 free drink tickets. So far the $99 annual fee has been worth it

You also get a free night certificate worth up to 40k points, and they recently changed it so that you can add points to stay at more expensive hotels. The annual fee is really worth it when you use the fourth night free perk.

Comes out to $0.00575 cost per point. Not a screaming deal in my opinion to just bank points, but for specific redemptions it could definitely make sense.

Do you only get the fourth night free if you have the credit card?

tricked here? i put this info out, you can do what you want with it. just like any other deals here, a completely free forum where you're not required to pay for a subscription or membership, you can thumb it down or thumb it up. no one's forcing you to "get tricked".

i originally posted this in the travel deals forum where no one looks. then there might be a benefit to slickdealers who are short on points so i moved it to hot deals.
Yes, tricked. There is no deal here, yet it got pushed to fp. Avoid tpg at all costs as well. Follow more decent bloggers. Sd gone downhill with mods pushing worthless products. I warn ppl because they think its user generated content, where so many deals are behind the scenes shady marketing, especially with travel deals and credit card signups. Makes me miss Selma!

For everyone out there wondering whether this is a good deal or not - it usually depends on where you're going to stay. If you are seeking a premium destination or resort type of place, then it will most definitely not be a good deal. But if you need a comfortable place to stay in the middle of a long road trip, then it is great.

For example, Holiday Inn Express on the PA Turnpike is 14,000 per night. The same room is $110 after taxes.
Uh ... IHG has thousands of premium hotels and resorts. Kimpton properties are often very nice premium destinations, and Intercontinental hotels compete directly at the top of the hotel food chain. If that's what you're after, using points is often FAR cheaper than paying cash.

You're 100% wrong and should just sit down.

Buying points is often a great bargain, this is a good deal, and your objections are idiotic.

Do you get extra points for using ihg chase card to buy points with this offer?
Like you are supposed to get so many points per dollar and extra on travel etc.

So say I bought 50000 points on this deal, they double it so it is 100000, do you also get extra points for using ihg chase card? So would I wind up with like 110000 for buying 50k?

Yes, it's a perk for having the card. But the free night they give you easily justifies the annual fee for the card (a 40k point hotel is almost always >$200/night). They also throw in two $25 credits for United Airlines every 6 months, and the card has a very good rate of return when used at an IHG property. The fact that it makes you a Platinum Elite which comes with room upgrades is just a free bonus after all that.

You will get 3 points per dollar.

The IHG card has a 20% bonus when you purchase points, but that only applies when you buy them at the normal rate ($0.01/point), and the charge is processed by points.com, so you will not receive the bonus points as if it was an IHG expense.

Better to put this on a card that earns 2 transferable points on basic spend, like the Venture X.

Sorry, I'm dumb and misread your post.

But this is the card you need for the fourth night free perk:

Do you know if I can get the card, and then modify and existing reservation to get the 4th night for free?
Points reservations are refundable, so you could cancel and rebook, but you'd need to make sure the price hasn't gone up before you do that.

If we decide to stay 8 nights, will try to do two reservations to pay for 6 nights.
You don't need to split the reservations. An 8 night booking will credit two nights for free. 12 nights would give you three. I just booked an 8 night stay and the 4th and 8th nights were 0 points.
