This *can* be a good deal, but you need to be smart about how you are using the points.

We just came back from Nice (Frnace) where we paid about 11,000 points per night. The cheapest cash price on non-cancellable room (same hotel, same dates) would've been $85 + fees and taxes. Cancellable rate was about $95 + fees and taxes. Basically I got about 1 cent per dollar. I should mention I do have IHG credit card which gives me 4th night free when paying with points, which is one of the reasons the rate was this low.

At the end of November we stayed in Holiday Inn Express close to Universal Studios Florida for about 11,500 points per night (also would've been about $100 + fees & taxes if paying cash). That was also after 4th night free.

However when we looked at booking a room in Phoenix in March, the cheapest was 28,000pts/night and up from there (that's also after 4th night free). Cash prices were just a bit over $100 on the cheapest properties. That's a bad value, so we didn't book it.

So IHG points can be worth about 1 cent per point if you:

1. Have an IHG credit card (from Chase) and get 4th night free when paying with points
2. Choose your dates and properties carefully.

Also you have to book way in advance (like several months in advance) because properties "sell out" of "reward nights" (nights you can pay with points). So a hotel might have rooms available but you won't be able to use rewards on dates close to travel.

I don't think I would be buying the points unless I had a specific property and redemption in mind in near future due to points devluation. But in general it is a good deal.

Is this really a deal when points are devalued day by day? I think ihg hotels are upwards of 60k points these days per night

11,000 + 11,000 bonus = $126.50
22,000 + 22,000 bonus = $253.00
26,000 + 26,000 bonus = $260.00
27,000 + 27,000 bonus = $270.00
same for anything above this amount

Sample rates:
$225 per night hotel costs 43,000 points
$292 per night hotel costs 57,000 points

doesn't seem like a good deal. Seems like regular price.

I'm having trouble signing in to buy point with my IHG membership #. Even reset password. Any ideas anyone on quickest way to resolve?

Also quick question do you guys recommend points redemption per night or points plus cash? Reason I'm asking is I've noticed e.g. It's 25k points per night or 10k points and $80, but the property only costs $110 per night plus taxes! So $30 for 15k points = worthwhile?

I've been IHG Diamond for many years, I stay in network 50-100 nights a year, mostly on personal travel.

At least half of my nights are paid in points.

So, I have a lot of experience playing this game.

I almost always extract at least 1 cent per point in redemption value, sometimes more than 2 cents vs refundable rates. It's definitely possible if you are somewhat flexible with dates and location.

I max out those "buy points" promotions every year without hesitation for the full allowable amount (often 500000 points)

For the full disclosure, I have 25% off credit card (4th night free) and 10% off old credit card on the top of that - further boosting the value of my points by ~50%
I have the new and old card, but noticed they stopped giving me the 10% points back at the end of the year, are you still getting yours in addition to the 4th night free?

Points reservations are refundable, so you could cancel and rebook, but you'd need to make sure the price hasn't gone up before you do that.
Oh it did, the price now is 50%, it would not make sense even with the 5th night free.

Someone over on flyer talk posted that the 10% back maxes out at 100k pts per year.

These don't expire as long as there is at least one points accrual or redemption activity in a year

If you do not have elite status (silver or better), points expire after 12 months of inactivity. However, any activity that earns points OR spends them will extend your expiration date.

So you could buy a few points next January to keep your account active, or make a points reservation at a hotel.

Their stupid server was giving me a generic red error message when trying to login for a while. Dev tools identified it as a 429 status code when accessing the login service, which is a rate limiting error (but it did it the first time I tried to login and regardless of how long I waited). It cleared up on its own after several hours.

I'm staying in ATL soon and my hotel is 18000 points. I just bought 9000 and got the double deal for 18000 points, which will save us about $70 on this short trip. Thanks!

A cool tip for those interested: if you use reward nights at a resort type of hotel, you are exempt from the resort fee and additional taxes. That ends up saving you a ton!

That's a YMMV. I've never paid taxes but I have paid resort fees even as an Ambassador Diamond Elite on a points stay.

And with points, you can cancel 24 hours ahead of time and get a full point refund. When paying with cash, it costs more to be refundable at 24 hours.
This is not correct. It is whatever the regular hotel cancellation policy for any type of rate is which includes points reservations. For example, Holiday Inn Vacations Resort in New Orleans has a 3 days cancellation policy. Venetian or Palazzo Las Vegas 3 days. Staybridge Suites Las Vegas 2 days. Yes, most IHG properties are 24 hrs. but not all. Always check before you book.

This seems to be maybe 10% off value vs dollars.
when combined with free 4th night when redeeming points it's more value but you do need to stay 4 nights.
So if you are not really planning 4 night stays then kind of not worth it to tie up your money in points which always get devalued over time.

So if you are maybe 5-20k points away from having enough for 3 night stay (4th night free) then it may be worth it.

I would just apply for the IHG business premier cc and get 140k points for 99 annual fee.
About a 700 dollar value for paying the 99AF and spending 3k within first 3 months.

If you have ebay or amazon and sell anything then you have a "business".

That's good to know. I wonder if IHG changed resort fee policy because they didn't charge me in Hawaii last December either. I asked and was pleasantly surprised that she did no resort fee for point stay.
Depends on the property. There is no blanket IHG policy at resorts or any kind of property in respect to waiving fees regardless of your status or being on a points reservation. I'm Diamond Elite and currently being charged $15 per day for parking like everyone else at a Staybridge Suites.

Amenity fee is the newest term that IHG hotels are using replacing the term "resort fee".
