My two cents. Booked my family of 4 on spirit to Cancun last week. Flight was cancelled the night before. No explanation whatsoever. Next flight out with them was fully booked too, so we had to pay $$$ to book with another carrier same day. Still haven't even gotten our refunds yet.

Spirit is great when everything goes right. But when things go wrong as they inevitably do, you're farked.

next time just add the bag via the app. you can do that last minute, even once you've already checked in. it's cheaper.

Looks like Frontier in Atlanta is also matching some of the dates in addition to going beyond March 6.

Also Pro Tip: If you're able to purchase Spirit or Frontier tickets at the airport they will waive the online Passenger Usage Fee. It can vary per flight but it's usually $22 each ticket and per segment/layover.

So for example I had a flight from Atlanta to Seattle for $74. There was a layover in Las Vegas so that took an additional $22 off on top of the standard airport discount. In total I paid about $60 roundtrip.

I am not sure about Spirit but no more Frontier for me. I flied with them round trip to Cancun last year. The delay out of SFO caused us to missed the second leg of our flight. Ended up sleeping at the airport overnight in Orlando. Another big delay on the way back but luckily we managed to catch our transfer flight. Their counter staff refused to answer a simple question about my ticket unless I pay extra for the service. I will try to stay away from these discount airlines except for Zipair (owned by Japan Air).
flied..lol. You can only use that in a sentance like "flied rice".

Cheap flight to go to Mexico to get robbed and shot
Cheap flights to Mexico to get away from America where all the dbags get angry and want to pull a gun and shoot you because they seem to be too cat to fight like a real man anymore. Everyone in America is "so tough" anymore because they went and bought a gun.

Let's just calm down and not paint broadly. I vacationed in Cancun for the first time last month(Jan '24) at an all-inclusive south of the Hotel Zones. I had a fantastic time. I also stayed in Cancun city itself for a couple nights before heading back. The people are very welcoming and generous with their time. I spent time meandering the streets for breakfast, lunches and dinners alongside the locals even late into the night. Yes, there are streets and parks that are not well lit, and there were public awareness signs in questionable areas. But those are typical of any city in the world. Riding the Collectivo, public bus($12 pesos/one way, the entire length of the bus route) is a very affordable great way to get around to wherever you plan to venture.
I understand that the experience could be a case by case basis. However, I would suggest you do your due diligence and be a local wherever you go. Bon Voyage!

Spirit airlines is currently working to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy since they couldn't merge with JetBlue. Be very CAREFUL booking with them as they're already known as a "cancel flight last minute" airline and don't help the customer get to/from their destination. The risk just isn't worth it especially internationally (unless you have family near and around Cancun as a fallback).
Even if they are that does not mean they are going out of business, it may just mean they want to restructure their debt. Going them out of business should not be an issue for your money since you pay using credit card which you can always dispute for non service.

You do need to be careful however if they cancel your flight and it ruins your plan/trip.

Land in Cancun, and go explore elsewhere. Go visit Isla Holbox. You can take a shuttle from the airport.

Bonus: rent a car and head all over the Yucatan to explore the ruins (Ek Balam, Uxmal, Chichen Itza) cenotes, and Merida.

Who travels internationally without luggage? Unless you're in that small percentage, by the time you pay for baggage fees, you might be better off with another airline

I am sorry you feel that way.

We go to Cancun at least once a year. We always rent a car and explore. We find it safer than many cities in the US and people are much nicer and kinder in Mexico.
