Is the slim series build quality any better than the traditional ideapad series ?

Again the 45% NTSC screen ruins what is otherwise a nice package. I get it when it's a budget $300 laptop but when something is retailing for $600 why are they still slapping this garbage screen on in 2024

For 2024, screens aren't the only crap thing that's getting into laptops .. soldered RAM's , low speed usb A ports , barrel charging connector instead of type c, 720p webcams.. etc

Wait till you discover even ThinkPad T14 and T14s which start at $1,000 also have 45% NTSC 300 nits screens by default, unless you customize the machine and pay for upgrade. Need to cut costs somewhere, I guess. (Have to appreciate Apple which always uses decent screens on their products. The screen on their base MacBook Air is better than the vast majority of Windows machines at any price point.)

I remember (like 18 months ago) when 16:9 screens with ~250 nits of brightness were the baseline for budget Windows laptops. So a 1200p 300-nit screen still seems to meet the threshold of "decently usable" IMHO. Plus a 13th-gen i7 (even the u version) with 16gb of RAM is going to be plenty peppy for regular tasks. This is a good deal.

I don't care about 45% NTSC as I don't do any photo or video editing. But 1200p is what I cannot stand. Still waiting for a 16-inch 1600p laptop with similar specs for under $500

With the 10% coupon the Inspiron 16 (FHD+ touchscreen config) will be just under 500.

I've seen a few 14" QHD+ deals under 500 that go live again every so often. The Swift 3 and the Zenbook 14X 14.5" OLED are both alive, but both models have the awful trait of 8gb soldered ram with no upgrade slots. (I can't imagine 8gb would hold out long nowadays on a QHD 120Hz screen.)

I purchased a similar laptop from the same seller a few months ago. Word of warning, the laptop conked out after 3 months (coincidentally just as their warranty runs out). The seller is extremely unhelpful and couldn't care less (including eBay). Luckily the Allstate warranty covered it. Buy at your own risk!

Generating e-waste tier laptops and then preach how they're being "sustainable"

good to hear the allstate warranty came through for your problem. i also got a cert refurb Thinkpad T14s from this seller back in Dec'23. the laptop was legit and it's been great so far but if it craps out in the first 2yrs, will look to use the allstate coverage.

Does it come with an all state warranty if i buy new on ebay? I found another seller @ $550, but they dont have any reviews.

the allstate warranty appears to be available for select refurbished items on ebay, at least for those that include it at no extra cost. have seen it in 1yr and 2yr depending on the items.
