Nice find. My HD did not have any of the batteries so they just let me buy the tool alone. No need for any hack.

I made the purchase, but I don't see any option to cancel the battery portion of this order.

How did that work? You ask for the free battery, they don't have it, they rang you up at the lower price?

Exactly. They did not have the free battery. I showed them the price breakdown from a simulated online order printout. Then I just asked to buy the stapler alone since they could not get me the battery in store. They did a price override and I was out of there.
