I live near the Lorton station in Virginia. I see the long lines of folks waiting to get their car loaded, sit and wait, sit and wait, car line often so long it spills outside onto a local road causing traffic issues. Lorton station does have a nice waiting area building.
But beware auto-train is often late, part of reason is passenger trains giving the right of way to freight traffic on the journey. Read the reviews, only a 2.5 rating on TripAdvisor. My neighbor had a bad experience taking the auto train recently, not all food services rendered, got a small refund he was not happy with, wrote to Amtrak about it.
One reviewer said this: "I took the train in Coach from Lorton to VA in Jan and have a return trip planned in a few weeks. The only reason to take this train is to avoid driving. Don't take this train for "an experience" or for "dining options" or for "expediency". ""
But I do love trains! Nothing will derail me, I will stay on track with my hobby watching them and sometimes riding them. =|=|=|=|=|=|=

You forgot flight costs (insert random JetBlue deal price here)
Still, yes, renting a car is still the more convenient choice. Unless you're traveling one-way or need your special vehicle for some reason (maybe a mobility van) this seems silly.
I'll wait....

Still not used the sticker shock. What a flip of a switch inflation has been, fast and furious. The official CPI , PCE data doesn't quite capture the reality in many cases.

Zero comparison. The 7 day trip would equal 4 days traveling from NY on auto train and DEFINITELY NOT pleasurable at all. NY-DC traffic is NUTS. The is only good for folks living near Lorton and going no further south than Orlando. It's useless for anyone north of Baltimore
But a lot of time wasted... Why not drive from NY?
We live in northern NJ (right outside of NYC) and have taken the Autotrain from VA down to Orlando a couple times pre-pandemic. We have a family of 5 and my parents came with us, so it was 7 of us total. My kids were under 10 at the time and this would've been for a 7-8 day trip down to Disney.
This was totally doable for us to wake up in the morning and hit the road by 9 AM in order to get to VA by early afternoon. Get loaded on the train with departure by late afternoon. Spend the night wandering the train, having dinner, playing card games with the kids, watching a movie, and then sleeping. Wake up the next morning, have breakfast, and arrive in Florida. We were off the train by mid-late morning.
My kids had fun being on the train and appreciated the novelty/adventure of it. There was a significant convenience to having our own car down there which meant that we didn't have to bring carseats and strollers on a plane. Packing was a lot easier - instead of having to squeeze everything into suitcases and lug them to the airport, we just packed our car and had everything transported down. We didn't have to deal with a rental car agency at the airport, or the airport/airlines themselves. And it was a lot cheaper than having to buy 7 plane tickets plus rent a car.
Yes, you need to have the time to spare for a night on the train down and on the way back. Yes, it doesn't make sense if you are one person trying to get down there by yourself. No, this is not only for people who have a residence in Florida and Baltimore or are a politician in DC. It does not take a day to drive from NY to Lorton, VA (Mapquest tells us it's under 4 hours, easily doable in a morning). It would definitely take us longer to drive from NY to Florida on our own, plus we'd wind up showing up down there exhausted. With a family under the right circumstances, this can make a lot of sense in terms of both money and convenience.
I'm not sure how many people commenting on this thread have actually taken the Autotrain before. Seems like a lot of people dumping on the Autotrain concept itself (while making a ton of assumptions), rather than the deal. Sure, it's not for everyone. But the whole point of Slickdeals is to post the deal, not whether you finds a use for it or not. And yet, I think this is helpful for more than the narrow situations that people are assuming. Thanks you OP for posting.
I really wish we had a better train system. If they get more of Brightline built, and somehow at all affordable, it might all click.
