It is still 4k, just not native 4k. A native 4k projector is going to run you over $5-6k for one that beats this or the Epson in performance. The entry level Sony laser native 4k was beat by the Epson in the avc shootout and costs 1/2 the price

The Epson 5050 is a better projector if you are in the market at this price range and has better features for the money.

This ht8060 is 7 years old...the 5050 is 5. Epson has a way better warranty experience

Still pixel shifting

"The DLP chip inside BenQ's 4K projectors uses a technology called pixel-shifting, which can achieve true 4K resolution with 8.3 million distinct pixels."

Looks good. I can't for the life of me understand why a projector like this doesn't have automatic lens shift capabilities. That, and the fact I just recently bought a new projector keep me from this one. The discount is great, though.

I already have a 5050for 3 years now but always heard that native 4k offer sharper images. Although 5050 is sharp there are sometimes I wished the projector to be a tad bit sharper.

You'd be having to go north of 6k to get something better than a 5050 unfortunately

Sony's XW5000ES is a beautiful projector but unfortunately performs poorly in dark scenes. So your best bet would be finding a lightly used jvc nx7. Probably can find one around 5

Nah, just get a NP5. B-stock can be had for around 4200 and they're 5k new right now. It doesn't have the color filter but most don't use it because it reduces brightness. Plus, the NP5 has the new and improved HDR tone mapping. There's been some B-stock NX5s for around 3k too.

I am not keen on the metal halide and the shorter lamp life compared to other technologies.

Although the UB5050 is an overall better projector, the benq ht5550 will be better at not showing pixelation if you examine up close, due to double the number of pixels used by benq-hence they name them tru 4k(not native). Here's [youtube.com]a good video comparing both. Watch from 12:58 onwards. I decided to keep my benq after trying both, primarily for its color accuracy.

I have a XW5000ES and it works pretty well for dark scenes, compared to my friend's NP5 at least

I have the ht9050, which is mostly the same projector (but with an LED light source and without built-in HDR processing). The lens on this projector is truly incredible, the best I've ever seen. You can argue about pixel shifting vs "true 4k" etc, but the corner to corner sharpness provided by this lens makes a bigger difference in the overall image in my opinion. The fact that it's using the larger version of the 2.5k DLP chip probably helps to. Not all pixel shifting DLP projectors are created equal.

That and the color depth are the reasons I got mine, though I think the latter is mostly related to the almost unique LED setup in the 90xx series, so can't speak to this version. Never expected one of these to pop up on Slickdeals...

I ended up going the route of picking up a used nx7 from a fellow Avsforum member. It was realllly tough dropping that kind of money on a projector, but after using it for the past 2 years almost every day I don't regret it at all.

The only redeeming qualities on this unit are the lens/sharpness (4k DLP shifters shift way faster than LCD shifters of the same era & can resolve 4k detail substantially better than say the Epson 5050ub), clean no crosstalk 3D (though it's lacking in light output for 3D unless you have a very high gain screen), and accurate Rec 709 color out of the box.

Pretty much everything else (low native contrast, no P3 color, bad HDR tone mapping, no motorized lens controls, DLP color wheel rainbows) are normally big deal breakers.

I could see this being decent on a living room ALR screen for SDR movies/TV, gaming, and PC content, or even if you're interested in 3D (again, using a high gain screen).

Otherwise, at this price, the Epson 5050ub (on sale now for $2500) is totally the way to go. Great native contrast, color, brightness, latency, motorized lens shift, and even a really good lens (even if the 4k LCD shifter doesn't resolve better detail than a 4k DLP shifter) -- its main shortcoming is HDR tone-mapping, so ideally you would either use madVR or Panasonic 420/820 for UHD HDR content or just stick with SDR. FWIW I have a 5050ub with an ATV4K, XSX, PS5 (all set to 4k SDR output) and it's one of the best projectors I've owned.
