FreeTaxUSA is very limited and will not handle most personal income tax returns. In addition, it is a web-based software and you agree to share your personal information for marketing purposes. Not worth the risk of security issues and risking personal information.

Unfortunately the free filing options only work for simple tax returns and lower incomes. Most have income limits and don't handle investments such as limited partnerships and any business income. Most people have some business income - selling on Ebay or whatever - so the free solutions only work for a handful of filers. In addition, you agree to share your personal information with those sources, so there are security concerns for any of the online filing tools.
FreeTaxUSA has no income limits, supports investments, rentals, self employment, gig work, multi-state, etc. And they don't charge extra for it either. The one thing they don't do is import 1099s from brokerages or banks. They do charge for state e-file as noted many times.

Cash App taxes will also handle most of these things and is totally free including state. They don't do multi state and a few other things though.

Always how it is. Print and stamp to save the $$$.
Or file on your states dept of revenue website (if supported).

You don't need to. TurboTax and H&R don't either when you e file. At least the desktop versions.
You could not be more wrong. I upload my brokerage and bank tax documents every year and efile every year. Stop with the disinformation. Of course you need to upload your tax info if you use a brokerage. How else are you going to input the data? That is why many people such as myself use the desktop version. Both TT and Block desktop versions support uploads from financial institutions. Everything you said is ridiculous.

It's not a lie that your info is stored on servers since it's a cloud based protocol. This software is local with cloud based options.

Many free tax softwares don't handle schedule E and other things beyond w2 and 1099-int. However, not all of them are so limited.
Yes, the data is there obviously, but they have a duty to protect it and cannot use it for any purpose other than preparing your return, which is not what was claimed.

Egh!

While the addition of a gift card with the purchase does effectively make it the lowest price of the season...I believe NewEgg can do better.
It's not the lowest price. It was net $8 for a hot minute.

I think you are confusing upload and import. I took it to mean that you are uploading brokerage documents (1099) to the IRS with your e-file and that's not possible from my experience. Maybe I've missed something. I'd be happy to be proven wrong if you can provide a screenshot or webpage showing this information. The IRS already has this data, so there's no reason to send it to them (although I think the instructions say to do so when you print and mail it in).

TT and Block do both support connecting to your brokerage and importing the numbers of course. But if you don't do that or your brokerage isn't supported, you can always put the numbers in manually. You could call this a download from the brokerage, but I wouldn't call it an upload.

I suppose you could call it an upload with the online version if it allows you upload a PDF and have it transcribe the data into their system. I haven't tried the online TT or Block, but I know that's not in the desktop version.

I have a very simple self-employment situation: a handful of 1099s and other freelance income (apart from my W-2 income) with very straightforward, minimal deductions. Will Deluxe suit my needs? I've bought Premium for the last few years, but I'm noticing people in this thread saying Deluxe does most of what Premium does, and H&R Block's bullet points mention Premium only offers "Advanced Schedule C guidance to maximize deductions for self-employment income" and not that you need Premium to do Schedule C stuff at all. Does it seem I could get away with just Deluxe without a problem?

Thanks for any input.

(I know I could go elsewhere. Assume for this question I intend to use H&R Block software no matter what.)

That is very much incorrect. It handles most every scenario. You are not forced to share your tax information for marketing purposes. Every prep software has to explicitly ask for that.

Stop making baseless claims.
If it's free, you are the product.

They make money by selling upcharged services and state return preparation Rolleyes

There's strict guidelines on when preparers can use tax information https://www.irs.gov/tax-professio...-questions

I think this is the lowest price it will get (with $20 GC). For me, most GC is useless except Home Depot or Lowes.

This is the list of supported forms in deluxe: (which they make very hard to google for by the way):
https://www.hrblock.com/tax-softw...available/

Everything you need is in deluxe.

Edit that's not the right list of supported forms, but deluxe will do what you need. They intentionally hide this information on their site and from search engines in order to upsell you.

Yes, but I was pointing out that not all of the statement is incorrect. Companies indeed have a duty to protect your data and yet many enormous companies, from literally every sector, have been hacked and had information leaked. To some people, local is the way to go regardless of marketing opt out options
