Can't find 5W-20

Napa is selling for $63.99 (5 qt) lol
Advance Auto has all 3 (0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30) at $41.99.

Wanted to try out the Ultra Platinum at least once due to BITOG. I just use Mobil1 from Costco (6 individual quart packs). Wasn't supper happy with the Kirkland 5 Qt jug even though it was super cheap ($25?). I do 6k OCIs (have done Blackstone, but am pissed with their over 1 month wait the past two months). Think I'm going to move to a different oil analysis lab.
You can't change the design of your engine, but you can keep it clean for maximum life. There are many oil ports inside the engine that will have internal build ups with dirty oil. The best way to reduce internal build ups is to have clean oil.

Regular API rated oil is cheap. Change every 3K (short trips) up to 5K max. There is no need to waste $ on synthetic unless you want to use 0W oil.

I run 5W30 on all cars in S Cal for since 2010. No engine failure due to inadequate lubrication. Some 2023 Mazda turbo engines also spec 5W30.

People are really crazy about oil brands. Fact is any oil that has you standard oil is going to work.

When was the last time you heard of someones car dying because of the oil brand they use?

In fact using the cheaper brands let's you change the oil more often at a lower cost.
100% correct. Make sure the oil is API rated SG or higher. The time difference for oil to reach critical head areas is less than 0.5 second when comparing 0W20 and 5W30 oil (50F ambient cold start 2008 Toyota Corolla). I would only recommend synthetic if the ambient temperature is below freezing.

Dirty oil will clog up variable valve timing areas and cause cylinder rings to stick. If the ring does not open, then the cylinder bore will wear, causing excessive oil consumption, loss of compression, and clogged catalytic converter.

If that was true then you would've seen millions of cars in the junkyards with bad engines from people who changed their oil at MANUFACTURERS RECOMMEND INTERVALS.

It's just not true. I used Costco 0w-20 on my RAV4 and changed it at 7500 and sent the oil in for an oil analysis. It came back saying the oil was still good and to increase to 8500 . we'll see how it works out at 8500 before I go higher

I trust the oil analysis more than some mechanic who doesn't have any testing equipment.

That's just my humble opinion

Pennzoil rebates are trouble. I prefer Mobil 1 rebates or like someone else said Costco oil when it's on sale.
Quote from HappyWater740 :
still waiting on my rebate from last year, screw em.....stocked up on costcos 10qts for $32
Quote from sdyccyb :
I did 15-25 rebates over the past years including Mobil 1 and Pennzoil. Being meticulous myself, I followed the exact rules and directions every single time and I still kept the record for all these rebates. There were indeed two rebates which did not go through and one which awarded me one $10 instead of two $10.
I do find myself being less and less inclined to bother these rebates now. Kirkland is fine.
This is the way! Kirkland $16/$17 a jug shipped when on sale.

I have seen several modern Toyota engines with the oil consumption problem. No, these are NOT the 2006 Camrys 4 cyl with bad piston rings. Stick a camera inside the spark plug hole and you can see the wear on the cylinder wall. Better yet, watch the video from this Toyota master tech (at 6:30)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJhFAwFv-O0

Oil report does not detect the minute uneven wear at the cylinder bore! Manufacturer spec longer oil change interval because they want to remain competitive when it comes to the cost of operation. But when the ODO hits +100K miles and the engine is out of warranty, you will see the waste $ spend on oil analysis.

This is a common problem will modern engines that use low-tension rings to improve fuel mileage. Companies must pay a penalty to the US government if they don't meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy numbers. 5W30 oil protect better at +50F ambient, but it also reduces the CAFE number. That's the main reason for pushing 0W16 or 0W20. Often, the same engine sold in Africa will specify 5W30 (no CAFE penalty).

No offense but I worked in the auto industry for years and had the opportunity to speak with both Toyota and Honda engineers about the oil change debate.

They both said the same thing. Do you really think we want to destroy our engines by telling people to change the oil later than it should. WHAT WOULD BE THE BENEFIT OF TOYOTA? They don't pay for the oil changes. Think about that.

They also said changing your oil earlier won't hurt the car. The only ones that win are the oil change places and the mechanics who get you into their shops to sell you other things.

Even the oil manufacturers don't tell you to change it earlier and they would make the same money and have the best testing equipment in the world.

Lastly I will say do what you want. It's your money.

Found 5 quart jugs of Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 at Autozone for $20 each on sale. So $40 - $25 rebate = DEAL. YMMV

He's referring to online pickup from Walmart, which generates the same kind of receipt you see with orders from walmart.com.

Ultra platinum 5qt jug is $32 on Amazon which doesn't qualify, but Napa has it for $63 5qt jug that does qualify but does not make it worth it. Nobody shelf stocks ultra by me
NAPA puts it on their monthly special periodically for $34.99. Odds are pretty good that they'll do it again in the next 7-months. Annoying, but with some patience you can get it for a decent price and use the rebate.

Looks like Penzoil no longer sells a 507.00 (VW diesel) certified oil? I know I bought some a year ago (one of the Plat Euro flavors), but don't see it on their site. Anyone know for sure?
If unsure, try the Pennzoil Oil Selector [pennzoil.com] for your car. My guess would be that it would point you to the Platinum Euro LX 0W-30 [pennzoil.com] which lists the "VW 507" in the Specifications tab.

Not worth the effort when 3-5QT jugs are $35 shipped from Amazon when on sale. Load up once a year and done.

Stay away from this crap Pennzoil Rebate. They will find a reason to refuse your rebate, and sometimes even no reason.
Wait to use it until the rebate clears, if there is an issue return it to the store. The not accepting Walmart online is a little ridiculous. order it online for in-store pickup.

Oil analysis does not say anything about condition of your engine unless it's too late. It says only that oil potentially serviceable. But to tell for 100% you need to test not just metals and viscosity but also oxidation, nitration, acidity and etc. those cheap $35 analysis does not tell much, it just an estimate

So better stick to your manual approved specs oil and Oil change interval for harsh driving conditions unless you drive only on highways with no traffic
