Most police use traditional radar nowadays. Still very viable. Police don't care much about catching every speeder. They just need to show production. It is important to lockout the false radar signatures from things like Dollar General so they don't alert. A few cars (Mazda or Honda maybe can't remember) will set them off. But, that still remind me to be focused on driving and conscious of my speed. A lot of highway patrol runs POP instant on radar that will not alert prior to an on unless you have a car ahead of you ( a "rabbit").

I live off an old rural highway that has been 55mph forever. I drive a car with above average braking and handling. I drive it at 70 sometimes. Even when I'm at the speed limit the radar detector reminds me to pay attention to my speed. Highway patrol gets very active a few times per year. I use a Uniden with Waze to avoid a dozen tickets per year. I slow down near driveways and entries to the road as my number one priority is others' safety. I feel more ethical doing this then seeing a dually lifted truck doing 55mph. I can stop faster and my vehicle weighs less than 3000lbs. so I don't have the momentum to kill unless someone pulls out at the last second in front of me.

It all depends on where you drive. Police by nature are very lazy (just like everybody else) and laser requires them to do extra work.

- they have to be stationary (can't use it on the move)
- they have to be outside of their car or at least open the window since they can't shoot through glass (think rain, cold heat)
- they have to look through a small viewfinder and aim at a specific car versus set it and forget it.

So for a cop if they have the choice radar is much easier to deal with. Also you couple this with running Waze and you'll find most of the ones running laser through Waze since people can usually easily see them and report them.

$289 is the regular price at Sam's (and better return policy). No deal here.

Nope. The Sam's is sans GPS for $289. The GPS version is not available.
That being said, the deal posted here is dead

That's incorrect (per the Sam's webpage, copied below):

"GPS Technology w/ Auto Mute Memory

I have had radar detectors for 15+ years in all 3 vehicles in our household. For the past 7 years or so I think we all had Uniden R3, one with GPS, 2 without.
No tickets for anyone in the household for all these years and not being pulled over until few months ago, by suburban police in Indiana. That was surreal, as the police cruiser was moving in the opposite direction, I slammed the breaks as soon as I saw him, my detector didn't go off at all and he u-turned and pulled me over. He was laughing at my R3 and said "this didn't help you, did it?"
Long story short, I got away with a warning. However that made me question the reliability of detectors. Waze would have been useless in that scenario as well. From a technical standpoint, I have to imagine they have some cameras that calculate speed based on pixels or something like that. I would be curious if the system holds in court and if the reliability was a reason why I got away with a warning. However, the officer told me exactly the speed when I saw him and after I slammed the breaks, although I promise it was all just a second.

Sam's has 2 options: GPS & voice alerts, currently unavailable, and Voice Alerts, currently available.
I wouldn't be shocked if the description or the fine print would not be 100% accurate at Sam's.
It doesn't make sense also to have a GPS option unavailable and then say that the voice only version has GPS

EDIT:
Both Sam's versions have the exact same details and descriptions. So it was just someone being lazy there when creating the product page.

This is the relevant paragraph, likely applying to the GPS model only:

GPS Technology w/ Auto Mute Memory

The R4 can remember and automatically mute false alerts (such as retail store doors) along your routes so you never have to listen to the same false alert twice.

Deal is live again. Great option if you don't want to buy a Sam's club membership to get the other deal. (not to mention their $4 store pickup charge if you don't have the more expensive sam's plus membership.)

For those with an R3 already:
Here is a nice comparison by Vortex Radar. https://www.vortexradar.com/2021/...r4-review/

My .02... they obviously do not make you ticket proof, but if you tend to speed I look at them as a reminder.

99% of the time cops are just using constant radar. so you get a lot of notice for the ones sitting on the highway divider or on the back roads where they do a lot of driving with them on. Those cops, they can definitely save you.

A true sneaky one sitting hidden and using instant-on, nothing will save you from that except hoping you pick up on them hitting the cars ahead of you.

Here in Michigan everybody speeds, so I like having something that gives me a warning most of the time one is coming up.

Is that worth $300 to you? Only you can say. I like using them.

Depends on where you live but in MA and RI they all use KA band...I have the R3 and an Escort in my older car and they have saved me many times. Especially the R3 in my Camaro...The Uniden are my favorite and I wish I never bought an Escort version. These are far superior to Escort in filtering out other vehicles' blind spot monitor.

Most are still running radar. In my travels, most leave it blasting constant-on.

Just about any quality modern detector will give plenty of warning of Ka band (~34-35 GHz) being spewed down the road. If K band (24 GHz) is in play, then good filtering is important, as many fellow motorists are now belching out K band trash thanks to their "driver aids."

YMMV on what your local/regional revenue collectors are doing. The gung-ho ones hiding on overpasses with lidar or concealed in the darkness triggering short bursts (instant-on) with their radar are much more troublesome, but Waze can neutralize some of that.
