I'm with you. Walmart did use to price match the online "sold by walmart" price in the stores. I've done it many times. This last week, they said they stopped. They want people to use pickup and lower price is incentive to do this. I told the manager how insane it was to use more manpower for an employee to take it off the shelf and a different employee to bring it to my car. It's cheaper for them to just sell the item for the lower price when we ask. It's counterintuitive for a retailer to spend more money on labor to sell an item for less. Walmart management has lost their minds!

Tried to purchase in store, and the price was higher. Store refused to price match, told me I had to purchase online and schedule pickup. When did this start happening?

Sorry, we do not match:

Walmart.com prices that are on special events (including but not limited to clearance, Rollback, Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals, or other limited-time promotions)

I have it. Tossed the lid somewhere and use without it.

Same thing happened at Michaels! (the craft store). They wouldn't price match what was online. I called the Michaels 800 number. They said the items should have been the same price as the online price...I'm just sick of us being squeezed in every possible way.

The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago at Target! I saw an item online on sale at Target.com and later went to the store to buy and it was $50 higher. And they refused to match their own website's sale price. I ended up having to order it on my phone and then wait around for it to be picked. From now on, I will surely order deals online for pickup rather than just go to the store. (I didn't want to have to deal with customer service at the store, but I guess I will from now on to get the online advertised sale price...or just get it shipped for free with my Target RedCard.)

Were you able to successfully check out? It did not show out-of-stock until I actually went to check out.

The trick to get them to price match in stores to peel the price sticker and barcode off the item and then show them the website price it works 90% of the time at the cash register

Maybe so; still I find it ridiculous when retailers won't price match their own website. Sorry, rant over!

Target uses security cameras and watchers more than you realize, so I would caution against this. Better to do it the way they want you to. Order on your phone for pickup if you did not already pre-order before showing up. That extra few minutes could save you from a major hassle.
