I like your advice, except it is outdated. There are a new class of soldering irons that are revolutionary. I have been soldering for over 50 years, so I would not say that unless I meant it. I have a Pinecil and I highly recommend you try it. I have been using a Weller and Hakko otherwise for the last 50 years and completely moved over to the Pinecil.
Wholesome advice in this thread
I have a pinecil too and I recommend it. I use it over my Weller 99% of the time.

So Pinecil, their overall pic has been removed from the store and you can no longer buy it.

Not a good look. Any idea?

https://pine64.com/product-category/pinecil/ you can a set of normal tip and then it is not so mini. In my searching the pine64 tips were about as good of a deal as I could find outside aliexpress. I like what pine64 stands for and $3.99 was cheap for a usb C cable... I really like the silicone usb C cable. It resists a little heat if you would accidentally get it close to the hot end and it is super flexible and stays out of the way so I haven't had an issue with it twisting over onto the tip.
thanks

I'm guessing this is the one everyone's talking about?
PINECIL – Smart Mini Portable Soldering Iron (Version 2)

The shipping kinda kills it. Brings it up to $38 for me. Not saying it's not the superior choice, just that it's not $26.

Do you have a recommendation for a good flux that would be good for smd practice soldering? I noticed a lot people use a gel type now.

Additional recommendations with the pinecil. I like the BC-2 tip:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...=UTF8&th=1

Its a tiny chisel, perfect for PC boards. Fits in the pinecil.

For solder, I like Kester 60/40 tin lead, but make sure you are well ventilated due to the lead. Lead solder is fine if you do just a little soldering. If you solder more, go with lead free. I dont use flux when soldering - only when desoldering. I rarely solder SMD anymore due to my poor eyes...

Ahh I forgot how much shipping was... looks like it is maybe a flat rate for shipping... So if you wanted to get any accessories or other products the hipping would be the same. Looks like it is still $1 or 2 cheaper than Amazon and you don't need a prime account... At $38 I still think its a good deal... just not as slick.

I ended up getting it. It's gonna be my first soldering iron.

So I ended up getting this for the hot air gun. Got it today and tried it out. Honestly, I'm impressed. Measured the temp and after some calibration had both the solder iron and hot air gun sit perfectly at 350C. Solder iron takes about a minute to really get to 350C even though the display shows it reaching a bit earlier. Probably because the probe is closer to the heating element than the tip. Hot air gun heats up quickly and does go to sleep and blows cool air when put in the cradle. The station is very light and will definitely move when pulling on the cables. Does the iron have the power to heat up solder on a larger surface, that has yet to be seen. And of course, the biggest question, how long will this thing last…

Yup. Note that the price direct has a high shipping fee, but the total is the same as from Amazon. If the price is the same, I recommend getting the USB C cord that pine makes. It is a superflexible Si cord that makes using the iron a lot easier.
