Placed an order with two different pickup locations. They cancelled my battery order on me 5 minutes after placing the order. The sander is ready for pickup 🤣

I used to do it that way all the time, but I don't think they let you anymore.
I don't know why you're getting unhelpful votes. This used to be THE way to do it and anything else was wasting time and gas. I also just tried it and it no longer works.

I think a bunch of people think the home depot hack is unethical and down vote anyone who talks about it. Home Depot could put a stop to it in less than a week if they didn't want us doing it.

Add the 'free' battery (top right of listing screen) and you get the sander and battery for $159. This prorates the items at $65.16 for the sander and $93.84 for the battery. If you don't want both items, you can return one and keep the other at the prorated price.
Does this work for all get a battery free with a tool?

Generally, yes. If they list it as a free battery/tool and you add it by the same format as this one, then yes, it will get prorated. Home Depot often also sells the same combination, for the same price, but already bundled, so you don't add the free gift. In those cases the bundle is priced as a single item and has to be returned complete. (Those complete bundles are often what is offered for a further discount in the daily deals).

If Home Depot put a stop to the prorated returns, they would get a big drop in their BOGO sales, and therefore get less free batteries/tool from the manufacturers for these promotions, reducing their overall profits.*

Likewise, if the manufacturers believe that prorated returns defrauded or undermined them, then they would make it a condition of the promotion that the retailers could not use this practice for BOGO deals. For most of them, HD is their biggest outlet and so it would amount to negligence if they didn't understand the conditions of sale under which HD offer their promotions. In the end, if the consumer returns one part of the promotion they are still keeping one of the manufacturers products and propagating future sales through reinforcing their platform.

Never done a hack before. Can you initiate the battery return online or do you need to go into a store? If online works, then Home Depot doesn't really care about these "hacks"?
2 ways to do this.

1 When you order, send sander to your preferred store, send the battery to another store. Don't pick up the battery. When they call, tell them you no longer need it. They will refund it to your card.

2. Return battery to store.

There's a deal on the random orbital sander for $85.
