FYI ... Amazon plans to charge for Alexa in June. Personally, I'm not investing on any more Echo devices if there's a fee to use Alexa.

My Echo Show 10 has been super laggy lately so why not. My trade in value for the 10 was $60 and I was suppose to receive 20% off the 15 at check out which never applied, only the $60. I contacted support and they pushed through a 20% refund, so essentially I paid $100 for the 15. Thanks!

Interesting... Been all-in on "smart home" mainly due to the voice control of alexa. Never really considered it could eventually be a paid service. Would certainly keep the usability of Alexa for a few bucks a month, but would probably look for more options like physical triggers (i.e smart screens/buttons/etc). for anything more than that (thinking costs spread out over many years).

Side thought - I wonder if the local processing of Matter over Thread smart home protocol may be pushing the 'Alexa Plus' mentioned in the article. However, AI would need cloud connection. Guess wait and see...

There's no evidence of this and even the linked article paints a very clear picture that if a premium version of Alexa ever sees the light of day, it will be an alternative option, not a replacement. Nothing anywhere indicates Alexa as we know her is going anywhere.

Either way, we really aren't very close to this being a viable reality. The AI tech needs considerable improvement before they could even start thinking about releasing a polished, public-facing, subscription-based version.

Actually ditching my Google equivalent since it won't do media based alarms any more. Really don't need a bedside one of these for any other reason. Last I read, Alexa still does, so screw Google. Anything else, I can just use my phone or the Google home app to do whatever. Shame Alexa sucks for whole home audio.

I'm fine with Amazon charging for "improved" Alexa - maybe AI might make her less accident-prone. However, I'm not about to shell out a subscription for the same barebones version of Alexa I'm using today.
