JIS is an old standard that got rolled into the new Phillips standard, so modern high quality cross point bits and drivers (built to the new DIN 5260-PH/ISO 8763-1 cross point standard) should fit Japanese screws just fine.

Is this one of those that you can set the direction and turn clockwise and counter clockwise to ratchet same direction thereby not wasting a turn?

So is everyone saying this ball grip is not up to JIS standards then? Does it come in blue?

There's an interesting exchange in the comments to that article in which someone does try the Hozan on a motorcycle and claims that it is a better fit than run-of-the-mill Phillips, but not as good as some Vessel bits.

For me and my uses, this conclusion sums it up well enough:
"Bottom line, look for the DIN 5260 certification on your cross point driver and don't worry about the JIS anymore."
Unless you work on an old Japanese vehicle. Subaru has some pita JIS hardware.

No, it doesn't do that. It should ratchet in either clockwise or counterclockwise directions. What is rather unique about it is the ability to turn it into a stubby ratcheting driver.

Rep. Awesome thanks for the reply. I'm looking for a quality driver deal that can do what I mentioned, but definitely unique to turn into a stubby and that I don't have in my toolkit. I've not seen a stubby or combo driver like this that can even perform the mechanism I described. I'd be curious if there were any though.

i've tried and tested many.. wera, wiha, vessel, etc and found these vessel sakisubo to be the best. the longer hex anvil won't fit standard US impact chucks but they do fit wera rapidaptors and my japanese makita impacts

Although I do wish it was JIS. I know others here have said JIS is a myth at this point.
He may have worded it poorly saying JIS was a myth, but JIS has been superseded by a superior DIN standard. It is nonsensical to wish for JIS at this point when the top tier manufacturers are already equal or better at reducing cam out on JIS screws.

Still doesn't make any sense. The DIN5260 has superseded JIS, and it has at least equal cam out resistance. If the price is the same, there is zero, and I mean zero, reason to search out JIS over DIN 5260. Even most screwdrivers that most people associate as being JIS are actually the DIN 5260 standard now.

To put it very simply, DIN 5260 screwdrivers work at least as well as JIS screwdrivers on JIS screws.

I just sold mine and 2 other Vessel ratcheting driver on eBay. I liked the quality but the big problem was that I kept accidentally changing the ratcheting direction the opposite way while using them. Not just once or twice.. every time I used it. They were unusable for me. Unless you have smaller size hands, this is most likely going to happen.
Yeah, that's a common issue noted on the Vessel. Maybe try the ANEX. The biggest selling point for this particular vessel is that it actually accepts the US-spec 9.5mm anvil bits.

Sure, welcome. I actually don't own this one, but do own a silky smooth Vessel stubby that I posted a few months back. I have a couple full size ratcheting drivers (PB Swiss and Wera as well as a few cheapies). That said, I don't recall seeing any ratcheting driver that turned one direction regardless of which direction you ratchet the handle. The reality is that most people want to be able to ratchet in either direction, so a ratcheting driver that just went in one direction with a right and left twist of your hand, would probably not be very popular.
