told the guy at the counter I wanted to buy a new phone and activate a line. I said I wanted the razr and I wanted to trade in my device. he knew was was up right away. I selected the $20 a month pay by the gig plan. The trade-in value of my device exceeded the cost of the razr+ so the excess went towards the $20 activation charge. i walked out with a sealed unit (the last one that store had in stock), having paid $8. the device will be able to be unlocked after 2 billing cycles.
tips: make sure your device is eligible for trade-in via the spectrum website first. Check the IMEI during the trade in quote as well if you can. do the deal in store, surrender your old device to the rep at the counter, and make sure you get the new device right then and there. select the $20 plan and don't use any data. set a reminder to unlock at day 61. be nice to the rep at the counter. I got the last unit in their inventory. The guy literally told me he was going to do this same thing after work today. if I had been mean or curt or otherwise not warm and friendly, he might've come back saying oh sorry we don't have any left.
good luck
tu and rep to OP. i felt like i stole something today. THANKS!
If you go in store you can trade in old phones for a straight up $800 credit towards the phone if you choose the "pay in full" option vs the 36mo finance option.
Also as of yesterday you could trade in a phone in-store and get $700 towards any of the new galaxy s24 phones. Doing that with the paid in full option seems to net a pretty cheap s24 (~$100+ 2months cheapest service) after using for 2 months, unlocking after 60 days, then presumably cancelling the service.
Great DPs here as always

It wasn't gonna save us any money a month because I'm on a share plan with my parents. Paying 25-30$ a line on Verizon
We all upgrade our phones once every 2-3 years. And we use iPhones, so you think your saving 5$ a month and then later you want the new or last gen iPhone and your gonna be looking at 40$ a month.
Verizon occasionally has awesome upgrade deals directly, or through Walmart or Best Buy, so sometimes you can find last gen iPhones for half off or free sometimes depending on the deal.
So for me, switching to discount wireless carriers makes no sense. But not everyone can pull off a family share plan and that's understandable. But spectrum will NOT let you get good deals on the phone. This is one of the few times I've seen them offer a deal, and it's honestly not the best phone to be honest.
And most importantly, is it worth saving 5$ a month for a carrier that roams off of other carriers towers? If the tower gets congested you lose coverage during that time because Verizon gets the priority for their customers and there's less priority for anyone else. I've heard of people getting text messages and voicemails 24 hours later because of the congestion.
ETA: say hi to your Mommy and Daddy from us poor people.

i also checked the offer detail, it doesn't say new line being required. but the thread says we need new line. It's so confusing. i red all the comments here and didn't find clear answer. is upgrade still valid?
