This thing is pretty pointless if you need any kind of reliable large storage capacity RAID configuration...only raid 1 OR 0 on the first two slots and only single disk mode for the last 3 slots...lame at least allow some kind of raid for all 5 slots...

Depends on what you are needing to use it for. I agree it would be nice to have raid on all 5 slots but since I use these for Plex I don't need to have all of these running like it. Single disk setup is what I was looking for. I made sure to add the bullet points of only raid 0 or 1 on the first two slots in the first post.

What a funky RAID limitation. And, they could have spent a few extra bucks and used a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface to get 10Gbps so you could actually get the full speed from the 2 RAID 0 drives. Limited to 410MB/s is less speed than one single SSD.

I currently have a Raspberry Pi 4 as my NAS running OMV with a single enclosed HDD hooked up via USB 3.

Been meaning to expand it and have an alert for "NAS" but nothing is ever on sale. I like the low power of the Pi and don't need a beefy server in my NAS.

I suppose this would be a good way to expand with some extra disks lying around. "Single" disks here would just show up in OMV as individual disks, yea?

Yes the single drives will just show up as individual drives.

Yeah that's great and all but most people want at least some kind of redundancy for their data. Even for the Plex use case, you don't want to have to re-download between 20-60% of your media library due to 1 or more single drive failures. Even that assumes you use RAID 1 for the first two bays. I guess if you don't care about having any redundancy and can afford to risk losing much of your media library, sure. It's better to spend the extra money and have some kind of redundancy IMO, it's well worth it long term, especially if you have others streaming from your library.

wow this has to be the shittiest "raid" box ever. i guess you could still do software raid to have raid that uses all the disks.

I got the 4 bay version in November (around $145). I've been very pleased.

Very simple to use - just insert drives and plug it in. Housing is solid. Fan is super quiet - I don't know if I've ever heard it.

The drives go in very easy. Just pop out the plastic bay and remove the two side things, pop the drive in and put the sides back. No screws needed.

I've only used it as JBOD so I can't speak of how it works for RAID.

Write speed is very fast, and there's no issues writing to multiple drives at the same time.

Very pleased with it.

I wouldn't recommend it for someone that wants RAID and that's why I didn't put it in the title. Apparently a lot of people are only looking for RAID so this is not the unit for them.

I'm glad the 4 bay is working out for you. I agree with you about it being easy to use and quiet.

If using truenas you might be able to set the drives up in a zfs pool and use a software raid.

Hardware RAID is sorta dead for large drives anyway, I bet this would be good for Drivepool

Works great as an offline data backup. I have my Synology 8 bays as a primary NAS with redundancy. This functions perfectly as a backup for the data there. It's way better than buying another expensive NAS simply as a redundant back. Thanks, OP.

I purchased this year's ago, and I haven't had any issues at all with this unit.
