Terramaster D5-300C 5 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure - $175.99 after $44 coupon at Amazon.
About this item
- 5-bay RAID storage, compatible with 2.5"/3.5" SATA hard drive or SSD, supports 20TB hard drive, total capacity up to 100TB. (Note: users need to purchase their own hard drives. These are not included.
- Unique 2+3 RAID mode: hard drive #1 & #2 can be configured as RAID 0, RAID 1 or Single disk. The remaining drives #3-5 work as single, independent drives.
- Adopts real SUPERSPEED USB3.1 (Gen1) Type-C interface, the read/write speed is up to 410MB/s (SSD in RAID 0).
- Compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux computers, and also works with the computers possessing the Thunderbolt 3 interface. This is a DAS, NOT a NAS.
- D5-300C adopts aluminum enclosure and low-noise fan, which is firm and reliable, of good heat dissipation, and low noise.
It is not a NAS, it does not connect directly to your router. It needs to be hooked up to a USB device.
I bought this so I can shuck my HDD enclosures and put the three into an enclosure that actually has good fans. I was also buying two more 16 TB hard drives from the recent deal posted on here.
I received it last night and the fans are quiet. No probably putting my current three into the enclosure.

Depends on what you are needing to use it for. I agree it would be nice to have raid on all 5 slots but since I use these for Plex I don't need to have all of these running like it. Single disk setup is what I was looking for. I made sure to add the bullet points of only raid 0 or 1 on the first two slots in the first post.
Been meaning to expand it and have an alert for "NAS" but nothing is ever on sale. I like the low power of the Pi and don't need a beefy server in my NAS.
I suppose this would be a good way to expand with some extra disks lying around. "Single" disks here would just show up in OMV as individual disks, yea?

Yeah that's great and all but most people want at least some kind of redundancy for their data. Even for the Plex use case, you don't want to have to re-download between 20-60% of your media library due to 1 or more single drive failures. Even that assumes you use RAID 1 for the first two bays. I guess if you don't care about having any redundancy and can afford to risk losing much of your media library, sure. It's better to spend the extra money and have some kind of redundancy IMO, it's well worth it long term, especially if you have others streaming from your library.

Very simple to use - just insert drives and plug it in. Housing is solid. Fan is super quiet - I don't know if I've ever heard it.
The drives go in very easy. Just pop out the plastic bay and remove the two side things, pop the drive in and put the sides back. No screws needed.
I've only used it as JBOD so I can't speak of how it works for RAID.
Write speed is very fast, and there's no issues writing to multiple drives at the same time.
Very pleased with it.

I wouldn't recommend it for someone that wants RAID and that's why I didn't put it in the title. Apparently a lot of people are only looking for RAID so this is not the unit for them.
I'm glad the 4 bay is working out for you. I agree with you about it being easy to use and quiet.
