Osprey Transporter 40L Travel Duffel Bag Black $91.52 FS Amazon

Amazon has the Osprey Transporter 40L Travel Duffel Bag in black for $93.39 [amazon.com] with free shipping, OR for $91.52 [amazon.com] sold by LY Berditchev and shipped by Amazon (seller has over 14,000 ratings with a 99% positive score).

The price has been fluctuating and Amazon has been dropping its direct price to stay within a couple of dollars of this seller. The last three times this happened the deals lasted only a few hours. Order now before the fight ends.

This is a great price on this outstanding and very tough duffel, and is my preferred travel duffel over the popular Patagonia Black Hole and others in this class such as REI Big Haul, Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler, Thule Chasm, and North Face Base Camp.

I really like Osprey stuff, but they missed the mark on the Transporter series. Other brands have more functionality and versatility in their similar products. This is essentially a square space you put on your back, not much else. Others have more compartments, convenient pockets on the exterior, shoulder straps for the times when you need to carry off your back. Grab handles are nice, but they're awkward to carry around that way. I love the Cotopaxi version of this, as well as the Mountain Hardwear series, and Marmot makes a nice one. No wonder this is on sale so much, and is a "frequently returned item" according to Amazon.

I could not disagree more. I spent a lot of time comparing these duffels before going on safari last year and the Osprey Transporter stood out as my top pick (at any price).
Of course, everybody has different needs, but I was pleased that Osprey resigned this to eliminate the separate shoulder strap. The hidden backpack straps are the best-designed of any in this class, with a sternum strap to boot, and you can adjust one of the two to function very well as a shoulder strap if desired. The bright interior design and compression straps are terrific, and the uncluttered exterior leaves nothing to get snagged if you check it. It's highly durable and weather-resistant while still being one of the lightest weight bags in its class. And unlike all the others, this one actually is easy to fold into its pouch.

As opposed to just comparing these duffels, I actually own and use duffels in this size class from the brands I mentioned, including the Osprey Transporter here. With a family of five, I'm not paying to check bags and deal with local transportation lugging around regular luggage, plus we simply prefer traveling with duffels. As mentioned, the Transporter series has fewer of the convenience features of the other brands that make traveling with duffels beneficial and easier, and it offers nothing that the other brands don't have. The Transporter is simply a square bag you put on your back. All the others have sternum straps. All the others strip down and close up to not snag on things. The Cotopaxi has the best designed hidden straps. Most have a bright interior - the Mountain Hardwear and Marmot have bright red; the Cotopaxi has bright yellow; the Patagonia is the only one with a black interior. All have internal compression straps. All have weather resistant coating. And most importantly, all but the Osprey have additional zippered stuff pockets for smaller items and the optional/removable shoulder straps that are most handy for shorter walks. However, if you consider the ability to fold into its own pouch as an advantage, well, you might need to use your duffel a little bit more. All that to say, of the six duffels I own in this size class from five brands, the Osprey is the last one picked out of the pile of duffels in the attic by the family when we're packing for trips. In fact, it has been relegated to being the equipment pack for road trips. I'm glad you like yours, though.
