TurboTax desktop is more powerful and has fewer upsells. For example, Deluxe handles investment income, rental income, etc. Online forces you to upgrade to Premiere for these things. Also, with the desktop, your data is not in the cloud, only your local PC. Desktop allows you to complete multiple federal returns for one fixed price, but online charges for each return. Online versions do let you work from any device seamlessly, including mobile. They also keep a copy of your return for future years or as an archive.
As for free versions for people that don't qualify for Free File, Cash App taxes is totally free (federal and state) and should work for the vast majority of people. there are a few things that aren't supported like multistate taxes. FreeTaxUSA is free for federal e-file and $15 for state e-file. OLT.com is similar.
If your state supports it, you can e-file directly on the state dept of revenue website for free.
For those who have Costco membership, for the same price you get 10$ additional discount in product add-on which can be used for state e-file fee.

Is there a simply chart someone can point me to that shows the differences between all the version of TurboTax. I file jointly but also need to file a final tax return for a deceased loved one. No rentals but do have investment income.

If you look at the TT website, marketing or charts they will upsell/guide you to a higher versions. H&R Block does the same. Don't listen to them. They lie legally and carefully.
Deluxe is all you need. Schedule D is what you need, and it is included. That is very basic return you are filing.
hr block deluxe (fed+state) for $15 a couple of weeks ago was front page.
why is this $40 deal for esentially the same functionalty front page?
Intuit has 70% of the market, so they can charge more and people will pay it. I think there was a poster in another thread that said they had only heard of TurboTax.

I wonder myself. So many just wing it with everything and do no research or comparisons. There was time that this deal would have been laughed off of SD. Keep doing what you are doing and keep it in mind when you hear anybody recommend anything. They may not have a clue.

Personally I would head to this deal and get Block for $15.
H&R Block 2023 Deluxe Tax Software (PC/Mac Digital Download, Various) (slickdeals.net)
Less than half the price for TT versions.
If it is just a federal one of the free option can also do it. If you need state, make sure to get the federal with state version.
