I never had a problem with VLC, and I'm sure there's other free software out there for watching blu-rays.

I've been using this as a solution for my Blu-ray drive for a couple years now. In practice it goes surprisingly well.

For what it's worth, I've been using Leawo Blu Ray player. It's pretty quirky and mildly annoying, so not a really great solution but it works.

You may need to flash an older firmware on this drive in order to use this drive to rip UHD discs but this is a great drive that can be flashed and unlocked. (Yes it's sad that greedy companies make it difficult, if not impossible for us to manage the media we paid for)
