Yes I wasn't sure if this dude was trolling or not when he had the temps in F. 65c under load is more than normal imo. I don't usually like if it gets last 70c but even then that's fine.
Is this considerably better than a 7800X3D for video editing and desktop apps? Or just marginal?
7800x3d is specifically tuned for games (more cache less speed - max boost is 5ghz vs 5.4ghz). So it even loses to a 7700x in most other applications. a 7950x would be much better, especially if your editing software can use all cores for example - scrubbing and rendering would be faster.

That's actually the last thing I am trying to decide on. There's just so many options from each OEM, it's been hard to narrow it down. So far, I'm looking at:
Asrock X670 Steel Legend ($280)
MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK ($280)
ASRock B650E TAICHI Lite ($270)
ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F ($260)
ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS ($215)
Edit: I ended up going with the Asrock X670E Steel Legend

I thought its normal if i measure my temps in Fahrenheit since I am from CA weather. Excuse my PC noobieness . I want to thank the SD community for sharing all your thoughts because it helped me find great deals on my pc parts. I made 2 builds from making stupid wrong purchases that ended up into 2 \beastie cool looking PCs. i also have a intel cpu i13700K from a microcenter deal which in my opinion is way faster and an efficient CPU. But check this, I have a 3090Ti from a BF deal from Nvidia and a 4090FE from Bestbuy. I paired the 4090 to guess what? the 7950X. Why is because i already committed to AMD from the start and when i thought I would build another PC, it would be Intel so I would know the difference. I like the way my i13700k runs. I had sleepless nights trying to keep my 7950x stable. NO more PBO for me. My 7950X runs at 5.1ghz no pbo when its suppose to run at 4.5ghz? So i just stop doing the overclocking thing on cpu but i do run my RAM at the speeds i payed for which is 6000mhz. I still kick ass in my CS2 game.
Question - how does Linux Mint run on this chip? Good?
Solid for the 16 -32 seen- cores and scheduling. Integrated graphics pretty much trouble free as well.
Intel is pretty solid on Linux but the no little core and smt on AMD just makes things more trouble free

So, to confirm, Linux Mint should work fine on this chip, especially when it comes to 4K gaming using STEAM?

I'm also in a similar situation, what are your reason to go with asrock x670.
I don't need it for gaming but I need cores so I have to buy ryzen 7850x
I eliminated the Asus boards because Asus has had a lot (and I mean a LOT) of trouble recently with poor quality control and poor customer service. It just wasn't worth the risk.
Next, the Taichi and the Tomahawk have good specs (especially the Tomahawk), but the PCIE is bifurcated (at least one of the PCIE slots is shared with an NVME slot). So you can't fully utilize all of the slots. For example, on the Taichi, M.2_3 (4x4) shares bandwidth with PCIE2 (4x4), using one disables the other. And, to be fair, many motherboards do this.
The Steel Legend is the only board on my list that does not have bifurcation of the PCIE lanes. That was basically what it came down to because the specs and prices of these boards are otherwise so similar.
